Greenland signs juicy deal with Europe in a blow to Trump

Greenland has granted a 30-year mining license to a Franco-Danish consortium to extract anorthosite, a rock used in aluminum production, from Arctic territory.

The license was awarded to Greenland Anorthosite Mining (GAM), a company backed by the French Jean Boulle Group and several Danish and Greenlandic real estate investment firms, according to Reuters.

While Washington has shown strong interest, Greenland’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Naaja Nathanielsen, said no concrete U.S. investment proposals have been submitted, unlike those from Europe.

Some of your arguments,   do not line up with actual US experience or practice.

1. Lack of Formal Investment Proposals: If the US did not present concrete investment proposals, that is a reflection of the viability of the Trump demand to take over Greenland. Trump was all bluster and empty promises. The Europeans were less talk and more action.

2. Regulatory and Legal Challenges: US mining company's would not be deterred by the state control of mineral rights in  Greenland.  In Canada, like Greenland, the "state" owns mineral rights. This has not stopped US mining and  energy companies from dominating the  industry and owning/operating multiple mining operations.  The US government as the largest  land owner in the USA  is also one of the largest mineral rights holders in the the USA. Energy and mining companies lease land for their activity. MN owns 1/4 of all mineral rights in the state, and the state has a sizeable mining sector.

3. Perceived Political Instability:  Greenland is a stable democracy. Foreign investors in Greenland are not scared by  the US aggression.

4. Infrastructure and Operational Challenges:  Greenland's climate is harsher but so too are the Alaskan and Canada's northern climate. US development projects were already underway long before trump. There are already two  mines in operation now . New development  was already underway.  In 2022 80 Mile Plc  and mineral exploration company KoBold Metals, backed by billionaires including Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates,are searching  for critical materials used in electric vehicles. Anglo American mining has had a footprint in Greenland for years as it searches for  minerals.
