Don Mueang opened as a Royal Thai Air Force base on March 27, 1914 - so the Thai military were responsible for that. First commercial fight was in 1924, first flight was KLM.

Though seeing as Thailand has been run by the military for most of the past 100 years I guess they're responsible for most of it.

No, of course not. The Israeli girl had no point at all.

There are 71 million Thai people. They produce a GDP of 515 billion USD.. Tourism only contributes a measly 7 .2 % to this GDP figure.

The Thai economy and Thai people have a lot more going than tourism.

The Israeli girl was talking garbage.

I think you need to check your figure, Tourism contributes about 3 times more than you say

Yah, I think you need to check your figures.

"In 2022, the tourism industry contributed around 7.24 percent to Thailand's GDP, which increased from the previous year. In that same period, the total value of Thailand's GDP was almost five hundred billion U.S. dollars. "

So exactly as I  said.

The central bank has cut its projection for foreign arrivals this year from 39.5 million to 37.5 million, with the reduction attributed to a decline in Chinese visitors to 5 million, said Pranee Sutthasri, senior director of the macroeconomic department.

The contribution to Thai GDP from tourism is expected to soften this year, according to KKP Research.

Great !  So what percentage of the GDP were those 2 million foreign arrivals contributing.

She's never been in the real Thailand apparently and thinks the entire country is based around the economy on Koh Phangan. These people may fly into Bangkok but then go straight into these tourism economies and they never see the outside world. What percent of tourists never see the real Thailand I wonder. Probably something crazy like 80%. That's why she got it so wrong.

Tourism is a significant contributor to Thailand's economy, both directly and indirectly.

Direct Contribution

In 2022, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to Thailand's GDP was approximately 4.8%, amounting to THB 831.4 billion. Website Files

Total Contribution (Including Indirect and Induced Effects)

When accounting for indirect and induced impacts—such as supply chain activities and spending by those employed in the tourism sector—the total contribution of travel and tourism to Thailand's GDP in 2022 was about 10.1%, equating to THB 1.74 trillion. Website Files

Employment Impact

The tourism sector also plays a vital role in employment. In 2022, it directly supported approximately 4.6 million jobs, representing 11.8% of total employment. When including indirect and induced employment, the sector accounted for around 20% of total employment in Thailand. Website FilesBank for International Settlements

Future Projections

Looking ahead, the World Travel & Tourism Council projects that by 2033, the total contribution of travel and tourism to Thailand's GDP could reach 23.4%, with the sector supporting nearly 10.6 million jobs, or 28.7% of total employment. Website Files

These figures underscore the critical role of tourism in Thailand's economic landscape, highlighting its importance not only in terms of GDP contribution but also in employment generation.

It just proves no country should be depended on tourism!

Thailand is not poor or depended on tourism if you looking at the infrastructure made for thais and Thai farming, factories and production companies.

Cut down to 37.5 million?

That is still more than 3 times the number of tourists that made up that 7% gdp figure you quoted for 2022….during the height of the pandemic.
