Commuters in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Pathum Thani are set to experience smoother journeys with the official opening of the newly expanded Chaiyaphruek Road. The road has been transformed from six to ten lanes, significantly alleviating traffic congestion in the region.

The Department of Rural Roads (DRR) spearheaded this mega-project to address the notorious bottlenecks caused by the heavy influx of vehicles, previously exceeding 40,000 daily. Since the openings of Ratchaphruek and Kanchanaphisek Roads redirected even more traffic into Chaiyaphruek, the expansion was deemed essential to keep pace with the growing demands of urban transportation.

“The development is aimed at accommodating the increasing traffic volume and is anticipated to vastly improve travel during peak hours,” remarked Montri Dechasakulsom, Director General of DRR. “It also positions the area for future urban growth.”

Spanning nearly 7 kilometres and costing 902 million baht, the project adds crucial infrastructure, including two additional lanes in each direction from the base of the Rama IV Bridge to the Ratchaphruek interchange, with further expansions to Bang Kruai–Sai Noi Road.

But the upgrades extend beyond mere road-widening. Four new bridges over Khlong Phra Udom and Khlong Bang Phum have been constructed, accompanied by new pavements, enhanced street lighting, and a modern drainage system to ensure safety and durability.

This initiative aligns with the national transport development strategy advocated by Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, who is championing the development of smarter, more efficient road networks throughout Thailand.

For commuters who have long endured the frustrations of daily gridlock, the Chaiyaphruek Road expansion represents a much-needed improvement, promising to ease journeys and reduce travel times significantly.
