The taxis are uncomfortable, smelly, many smell just like a Chinese restaurant. There don’t deserve the same pay as the Grab drivers.

I think it might be worse in Phuket, I saw in a Facebook group the other day a tourist wanting to get a taxi from the airport to Mai Khao I mean FFS it's only down the road, the hotel she would be staying at quoted 1700 baht, and some replies were as much as 750 baht, from Rawai to Mai Khao was only 700 and that's almost the length of the island,

I think this is a tourist problem, not a Thai one.

In all the 14 years my b/f & I have either lived in BKK or visited there 2 or 3 times a year, we've never had a Bolt/Grab, just regular taxis that we hail. B/f opens the door & says: "We're going to X, metered only". Driver either agrees or doesn't. If not we slam the door & hail the next one. But that very seldom happens.

Don't know what would happen if I tried it on my own, but knowing the drill I think I would manage OK.

A couple of years ago my daughter and family came to Phuket and stayed in a 5 star resort in Karon, one day I was sat outside on the front having a smoke, near the taxi's and a farang couple came out and wanted to go to the airport the drivers said 2000 baht, i couldn't say anything I just had to look away,

That's true. My family live in Chiang Mai. Recently my daughter in law spoke to a qualified / certified dermatology specialist, showing the specialist a LINE video chat of a skin condition her 12 year old daughter has on on leg. The specialists clinic is located near Phya Thai hospital in Bkk.

She flew with her daughter to swampy hen took the airport express to Makkasan. She went downstairs, cheapest taxi to the Phya Thai clinic was 500Baht. Taxi driver said, but your not Thai, you have a different accent and you use some different words.

Daughter in law responded. 'that's because we are from Chiang Mai'. Taxi man responded 'so you are not Thai, CM people are same as Myanmar, bad people, so higher price'.

Daughter in law called the skin clinic, doctor was helpful, she indicated a pick up spot about 100metres way around a corner and the clinic nurse drove her own car to meet them.

After the consultation doctor made called and arranged for a friend to pick DIL and daughter and drive them to swampy for 300Baht.

This has been going on for decades.

If they can't run a sustainable business they should go back to the rice and buffalo.

The problem is these people are mostly uneducated and haven't a clue about treating customers.

and I thought this was about over charging foreigners, maybe it's time for some Thais to open their eyes and see the double triple quadruple charges applied to tourists and expats anywhere in Thailand

I use Taxis and Grab daily. In case you're not aware, Grab is usually much higher than the metered Taxi.

Agree, that's why many taxi drivers are also on Grab/Bolt. Not sure how much commision they lose though. I do use taxis from the airport simply for convenience. Never been refused meter from airport.

FWIW: I usually book an electric car when using Grab/Bolt, that way I'm certain not to get a grumpy driver in a ropey old Bangkok taxi - vehicles usually no more that a couple of years old and younger, nicer drivers. Even get a nice lady driver occassionally.

Why not? Worked great with the customs officers. Raised their pay, they just kept the same old scams

They will just continue to scam you.

I can do copy and paste as well.

no, it's not just a tourist problem. I personally know a few Thai ladies who complain that they get quoted stupid prices when they try and take a taxi home from work.  that's in addition to the many reports I've read over the years of Thai people raising the issue of overcharging, refusal to use the meter or refusal to take them to their destination because "rot thit"

They have always been a notorious ripp off charging a minimum of 300 baht to go anywhere.  That's why I'm so relieved that BOLT have set up shop in Pattaya.

Bolt and Grab in Pattaya are a Godsend.

Why do people now mostly take Grab, Bolt, … because they are always cheated by the taxi drivers.

I wont use taxi meter taxis, cowboys.. ive been using Bolt for a couple of years now, taxi and motorbike, never had a problem and always fair price. Happy to leave a decent tip.  As for the lazy overcharging waste of spaces that sit outside hotels, they wont do short distance, only where they can charge big money. Will they take you.

i meant to say taxi metre taxis in bangkok city, from the airport i have not had any problems.

Bolt/grab are getting to be almost as bad. Last couple of times out of BKK airport it took 5 or 6 tries to get a driver that would accept the website's quote.

Driver's choice, there's no reason why any taxi HAS TO pick you up.

Further, I use BOLT a lot here in Chiang Mai. A couple of times I've had the message 'all drivers in your area are on other trips at the moment, do you want to cancel'.

And it's not only cheated on fares. 2 years back a long-term customer from the USA contacted me, he was organizing his first trip outside of the USA.

I offered to book a car service for him from Bkk airport to his booked hotel in Suk Soi 24. He responded quickly 'thanks but no thanks this is my first tip abroad I want to do everything myself'.

He arrived at swampy, found the public taxi Q, was assigned to a taxi, got into the taxi and gave the driver a printed copy of the hotel name and address.

After a few kilometers he tried to converse with the taxi driver and discovered the driver spoke good English. Suddenly the driver picked up the paper with the hotel name / address and said 'I just remembered that hotel burned down last night but don't worry I can take you to another good hotel'.

On the way the driver said 'the document you got from the Taxi stand at Bkk airport says there's an airport charge of 50Baht but it's printing error, the charge is actually 500Baht.

Driver then asks 'do you have any Thai money' Passenger responds 'yes I got about 2,000Baht at a currency exchange inside the airport'.

Driver drove into another Sukhumvit hotel but parked well away from the entrance area, then said " will drop you here so we don't cause any traffic jam near the hotel front door. Instantly driver took the bags from the car and gave the passenger a quickly written bill Baht showing the Baht on the meter, 200Baht road fees, 500 Airport charge and 200Baht personal tip.

Passenger paid, driver disappeared fast.

Passenger goes into the hotel, they have a room. Passenger says 'I did have a booking at another hotel but the taxi driver said that hotel burned down last night.'

Lobby clerk calls the manager, manager says 'do you have any document with the name of your pre booked hotel". Yes.

Manager checks and says 'that hotel just answered the phone, it's not burned down. Manager continues, 'you have been cheated, our hotel is 4 star not 3 star and our room rate is cheaper and we will give you 50% discount on first two nights as an apology for being cheated by the taxi driver'.

Not the driver's choice. He/she (only he in my experience) has a contract with grab/bolt. They don't get to renegotiate the fare after they accept it.
