Tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border are rising as the crucial court ruling on former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra approaches on June 13.

 

The Thai military had proposed closing border crossings due to heightened Cambodian military presence in disputed regions, a move rejected by the Thai government despite public outcry.

 

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai chose restraint, fearing economic repercussions and advocating peaceful solutions.

 

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has taken an aggressive stance, prepared to escalate the issue to the International Court of Justice.

 

The Royal Thai Army confirmed both nations have agreed to step back, focusing on the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) discussions to resolve the matter diplomatically.

 

These developments unfold amid a sensitive political climate, with Thaksin's impending court case adding complexity and potential for heightened tensions.

 

Both nations are engaging in diplomatic efforts, albeit underlined by underlying personal and political ties involving the Shinawatra and Hun Sen families.

 

As legal proceedings loom, the border dynamics could either stabilise or surge, impacting both domestic politics and regional relations, depending on the outcome and subsequent reactions.

 

The JBC meeting, hosted by Cambodia, is crucial for defusing the situation, as all eyes remain on the potential for diplomatic resolution versus military escalation.

My theory is, that the entire rattling of the cage, i.e. the incident along the Thai-Cambodian border, is due to Thaksin's stirring up the mud nicely. 

You unite domestically by presenting a foreign enemy. As we know, the present government is losing trust and power very fast lately and the opposition keeps driving in nail after nail into the government's coffin. So to deviate the attention, present a foreign enemy. It was successfully applied back in 2008 already once around Khao Phra Viharn and it will work again this time around.

I've been physically at the Thai-Cambodian border, at ancient border marks and met both Thai and Cambodian soldiers serving the protection of the border. They were more than brotherly, ate meals together etc. as the area is rather lonely and boring. From those encounters I can assure you, that someone gave the order to shoot; those boys along the border had the least reason to shoot anywhere. The fact that a Cambodian soldier (in other media I read about two) got killed would implicate, that it was Thai fire. 

Let's see what else is coming up; the Thai defense minister said earlier on, that he could not guarantee "no military coup" against the "democratically voted" government. Guess what, if the army does not listen to the government (it serves) and its top boss, the defense minister, then you might review their understanding of democracy, government and its divisions as well as what power the defense ministry, i.e. the army actually has.
