Report Thai Oil Implements Emergency Response After Sriracha Oil Spill

Thai Oil Public Company Limited has mobilised an emergency response after an oil spill occurred in the open sea near Sriracha, Chonburi Province. The spill originated from the Singapore-flagged crude oil tanker, Phoenix Jamnagar, docked at the SBM-2 (Single Buoy Mooring) terminal. A black oil slick, roughly 10 square metres in size, was reported drifting in the affected area.

 

The incident was officially reported to the Thailand Maritime Enforcement Coordinating Center (ThaiMECC) at 6:05 a.m. on Friday, June 6. The spill, resulting from a pipeline leak connected to the vessel, began at 12:54 a.m. and continued for approximately 30 minutes. The total volume of oil spilled is estimated at 10 cubic metres (10,000 litres).

 

Thai Oil identified the oil as thin, black or brown, with scattered patches spread across an area of about 10 by 10 metres, moving southward due to prevailing conditions. The spill was attributed to severe weather conditions, including high waves and strong winds, which challenged containment efforts.

 

In response, Thai Oil swiftly initiated its emergency action plan. Three containment booms were deployed around the spill site, and dispersant chemicals were used to prevent further spread. By 10:30 a.m., the company confirmed the incident, detailing their swift cessation of oil transfer operations and the activation of the Breakaway Coupling safety mechanism to avoid structural damage. This mechanism successfully limited the oil release during the valve shutdown phase.

 

Pre-emptively positioned containment booms helped limit further leakage, and SBM-2 remained intact. However, adverse weather temporarily displaced some oil beyond the booms' reach. No injuries were reported from the incident.

 

Ongoing cleanup efforts are in line with Thai Oil’s established emergency protocols, with collaborations involving government agencies and private partners to address and mitigate environmental impacts effectively. Thai Oil assures that further updates will be provided as they continue to manage the situation and restore affected areas.

A leak of 10000 litres of crude oil  will spread over hundreds of square metres not 10 sq metres due to the thin film it will form on the water surface.

10 square meters & then they say 10 X 10 meters (100 meters) & the picture looks like 2 - 3 thousand square meters.

I don't think it dose when they use these dispertants  it formes heavy golbules that sink to the bottom. You cannt make the oil disopear.

To the naked eye, that oil slick looks bigger than my front garden, which is 10 meters by 10 meters.

Dispersants are chemicals that are sprayed on a surface oil slick to break down the oil into smaller droplets that more readily mix with the water. Dispersants do not reduce the amount of oil entering the environment, but push the effects of the spill underwater.

I call that BS ! cube is 1000 Liters and that would  already spread out over  ore than 10 Square meters .

Anyway 10 square meters is nothing Bit of Spray  Oil dispersant than clean up a bit .
