California Governor Gavin Newsom has once again locked horns with Donald Trump, reigniting a political rivalry that may shape the future of the Democratic Party. His latest move—suing the federal government over the deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 marines—has positioned him as a leading voice of resistance against the former president. Newsom, 57, didn’t hold back, unleashing a media blitz that spanned traditional outlets and social media, including a fiery tweet to Trump’s border chief: “come and get me, tough guy.”

 

 

To some, this isn’t just about principle—it’s a calculated effort to reassert himself ahead of the 2028 presidential race. “A lot of Democrats are putting markers down right now,” said one party insider. “Newsom is no different there — but he’s making the most noise.” Though he hasn’t officially declared his candidacy, the timing is conspicuous. His second term as governor ends in January 2027, just in time for a presidential campaign.

 

 

Last year, speculation swirled that Newsom might step in when concerns about Biden’s health cast doubt on his viability for re-election.

 

Instead, Newsom remained loyal, declaring, “I’m all in, no daylight,” even after Biden’s faltering debate performance against Trump. When Biden stepped aside shortly after, Newsom supported Kamala Harris’s elevation as the Democratic nominee, avoiding a divisive primary.

 

With a wide-open Democratic field anticipated in 2028, Newsom now finds himself in a strategic position. He can enter the race with clean hands—having not challenged Harris—and with renewed energy as a vocal opponent to Trumpism. His allies argue that his current stance is about values, not ambition. “Unlike most political feuds in America, this one is not made up. It’s about principle. We have two leaders who have diametrically opposed views on that principle. A clash was inevitable,” said Eric Jaye, who ran both of Newsom’s mayoral campaigns. “If you’re a governor of California you understand that a huge part of your labour force is undocumented. If you lose millions of workers your economy is in trouble.”

 

Brian Brokaw, an adviser to Newsom for over a decade, echoed that sentiment. “It’s a perilous time and a volatile situation. This is one of these moments that tests the mettle of a leader. He is there, on the ground, engaged in this situation, and putting all his focus and energy into it. I guarantee you that the politics of the moment are the farthest thing from his mind.”

 

Yet there’s little doubt this clash offers Newsom a valuable platform after a difficult stretch. Wildfires in Los Angeles earlier this year sparked criticism over his handling of climate preparedness. Meanwhile, efforts to emulate Trump’s media tactics—like inviting Republican voices such as MAGA activist Charlie Kirk onto his podcast—alienated core Democratic voters. “This is also a lifeline for Newsom politically,” Jaye noted. “His strategy of tip-toeing into the ‘brosphere’ was backfiring. It was strongly rejected by people who vote in Democratic primaries. They don’t want to see collaboration, they want to see resistance. He was in trouble until this happened. Now he has a new lease on life politically.”

 

Critics argue Newsom’s approach is more opportunistic than principled. “He’s pandering to the activist base of the Democrats,” said Steve Hilton, a former adviser to David Cameron now running for governor of California. “It is a total U-turn from everything he’s been working on for the past few months, which is to move away from being seen as a California leftist and trying to position himself as a centrist for the presidential election which is obviously his main focus.”

 

Hilton is doubtful about Newsom’s viability in a national race. “He’s a well-intentioned, decent human being,” Hilton conceded. “I think his fundamental problem is that he’s a machine politician and that he goes with the flow and panders to wherever he thinks his political interests at any one point require him to be. In the end that makes you look and act in a way that is weak and unreliable and I think that’s the sad truth about him.”

 

Still, those who know Newsom best point to his history of bold, even unpopular decisions. “I worked for Gavin Newsom, we worked on gay marriage. It wasn’t popular at the time,” Jaye recalled. “I got calls from every Democratic politician in America saying, ‘What are you doing?’ He made San Francisco the first city in America with universal healthcare — and he was a moderate from the business community. He has a long history of showing political courage when standing up for vulnerable people,” Jaye added.

I'm a very moderate and Centrist Democrat and I hope he does not run. I don't dislike him but I disagree with a lot of his policies in regard to California, and I don't think that he's improved California on any level. 

 

Having said that I love the way he stood up to Trump and spoke truth to toxic power. Trump over reached with the Armed Forces, it was a historic mistake and I truly believe this man will go down in history as being a clown, a goon and a wannabe authoritarian dictator. 

 

Hopefully those authoritarian tendencies will be shut down quickly by the people, or by a Congress and Senate that can grow some cajones, or by his supporters who see democracy eroding before their eyes, and democracy can be saved.

I laugh when I hear punks like the "La Raza" people beak off about California really belonging to Mexico. They need to study a bit of history. Cali was part of Mexico for about 15 minutes. Before that, it was Spanish for 300 years, but I imagine that giving it back to Spain is a non starter...
