So increase the number of veggie-picker and meatpacker visas, make it a simple process to apply, and require EMPLOYERS to post a significant cash bond to ensure their LEGAL temporary employees pay all required taxes and leave when their contract/visa expires.

Encounters means illegals that the border patrol actually come in contact with, which is a small subset of the universe of illegal border crossers.

 

If ya don't see 'em, ya can't contact 'em, so ya don't count 'em.

 

Publicizing "encounters" instead of "illegal crossings" lets them bigly underestimate the number.

No matter what the actual number is be it 10 million or 20 million it's huge. According to AI the number of new arrivals between 2000 and 2010 total was just under 14 million and just over 11 million for 2010-2019.

Trump's been busy cutting off / reducing available visas to foreign nationals... and the visas that are available typically are not available to low-skilled workers who would be doing so-called menial jobs.

 

So it's a strawman's argument.... unless Trump and Co. are going to come forward with another round of "earning a path toward legalization" or temporary worker visas for service sector employees... And I haven't been hearing any of that from the Trump Admin lately...

Not sure about "real Americans" mate but people who are in the country legally sure. Should be massive fines for employers hiring illegals but that ain't going to happen.

Putting aside the optics, it is an intelligent response to a valid concern. The resources will be focused on other targets. There are so many unauthorized migrants that the change in focus will not change things. The initial strategy was targeting the low hanging fruit, the easy targets, Now ICE will have to work harder and go after the actual gang members and criminals.  In the interim, I expect that a strategy will be  implemented that facilitates the granting of work visas to the impacted sectors. Many of the unauthorized workers, didn't apply for visas, over stayed, did not bother to renew, or violated their visas by offences such as domestic battery or DUI.  It is up  to the Republicans to put on their big boy pants and to tell the nation, we need to refine the visa process and offer  the  essential workers a work visa, whether it is 1 or 3 million or more of them.  The current pause is not  going to  help anyone in the long term. The Democrats are going to have to agree.
