Politics Democrat Party Chooses Stability, Remains in Coalition Amid Political Strain

Thailand’s Democrat Party, the country's oldest political group, has decided to remain in the government coalition following a tense three-hour meeting on June 19. This decision comes amidst political turbulence sparked by a leaked audio clip involving Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.

 

Chaired by party leader Chalermchai Sri-on, who also serves as Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, the emergency executive committee meeting addressed rising pressure on the party to exit the coalition. Speculation had been rife about a potential departure after the controversial mention of Thailand’s 2nd Army Region commander in the leaked recording.

 

Before the meeting, Chalermchai dismissed rumours that the party had been offered additional cabinet positions for their continued support. "No such discussions have taken place," he stated, emphasising that the party's decisions would be independent and unaffected by external influences.

 

Chalermchai acknowledged the calls both to withdraw from and remain in the coalition, recognising the valid arguments on each side. He assured that all perspectives would be carefully considered.

 

After comprehensive discussions, party spokesperson Jenjira Rattanaphian confirmed a consensus to support the government. "The meeting focused on analysing the political situation, not on cabinet roles," she clarified. Despite differing opinions, she reassured that the party remains united.

 

Jenjira emphasised the importance of open dialogue, noting that all committee members had the opportunity to express their views. The leadership remains committed to prioritising the public's interests in their decisions.

 

Despite the ongoing political tensions, the Democrat Party has opted for stability, choosing to weather the current storm within the coalition. However, as pressures on the coalition persist, close attention will be paid to Thailand’s evolving political landscape to see if this unity endures.
