The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has launched a swift investigation into Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra following the leak of an explosive audio clip of her phone call with Cambodia’s Senate President, Hun Sen.

The investigation centres on whether the discussion breaches ethical standards required of a prime minister, potentially constituting a serious ethics violation. The probe, aiming for a resolution within 10 days, could have significant implications for Paetongtarn's political future.

The leaked conversation reportedly delves into sensitive topics related to the ongoing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, rattling both political and public spheres. As part of the investigation, the NACC will transcribe and translate the Khmer-language conversation into Thai to ensure accurate understanding. Key witnesses will also be interviewed to gather further insights.

Legal analysts are examining the potential diplomatic repercussions of the conversation, evaluating it against relevant Thai laws concerning governmental conduct. The case echoes a previous Constitutional Court ruling that disqualified former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin over a contentious ministerial appointment. This precedent may influence current proceedings and any legal challenges to Paetongtarn’s leadership.

The investigation was triggered by an ethics complaint backed by several senators, including Senate President Mongkol Surasajja. The document has been submitted to both the NACC and the Constitutional Court, underscoring the investigation's urgency and significance.

Should the Constitutional Court pursue further inquiry, Paetongtarn's position could face substantial jeopardy. The Commission is moving decisively, acknowledging that these 10 days could be pivotal in shaping the future of Thailand’s governance.

If initial findings provide ample evidence, the NACC will advance to a formal inquiry, potentially igniting a full-panel investigation. The situation is precarious, with widespread attention focused on how the Commission navigates this potentially explosive political scandal.
