In response to escalating tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has urged all ministers to devise relief strategies for those affected. Highlighting the importance of government stability and national unity, she addressed the Cabinet on Tuesday, stressing the need to tackle security threats and border-related transnational crime as flagged by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

With the closure of all border checkpoints in key provinces including Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, and Trat, the Thai military has intensified control to prevent any cross-border movements. Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree of the Royal Thai Army announced that, barring essential humanitarian cases and urgent medical needs, all vehicle and trading activity is temporarily halted.

Prime Minister Shinawatra assured that these measures are not politically driven, emphasising support for affected communities, particularly farmers and traders. Despite these assurances, local businesses express concern over long-term impacts on trade and tourism, highlighting the historically close bonds between communities on both sides.

The restrictions have also aimed to curb cross-border scams, tackling activities like fraudulent call centres that pose a threat domestically. Opposition leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut of the People's Party criticised military autonomy over such decisions, arguing that it undermines democratic governance. He called for a focus on peaceful coexistence and the broader economic and diplomatic implications.

As the situation unfolds, the Thai government continues to navigate the delicate balance of maintaining security while addressing the needs and concerns of its impacted citizens.
