New Yorkers say quality of life, safety have declined in recent years, according to new survey

@spidermike007

Nearly all Americans say that and virtually everybody that I speak to when I go back to the States a few times a year say the same thing. The quality of life has declined dramatically, while the cost of living has skyrocketed.

You're trying to make it a partisan thing, but this is just an American thing.

Is the theft under $1000- lawful?

And the attempt to stop it subject to prosecution as in the state of CA?

https://www.thecity.nyc/2024/02/21/shoplifting-surge-nyc-small-businesses/

New York City saw the largest surge in shoplifting between 2019 and mid 2023, according to a study of 24 cities by the Council on Criminal Justice, with an increase of 64%. Los Angeles was close with 61%.

Before COVID, Robert McCrie told his students at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, that shoplifting was on a more or less continuous decline as electronic surveillance systems made the crime too risky.

“Now those systems are being overwhelmed,” he said. “The controls on shoplifting have been reduced because there is not the will to prosecute misdemeanors, which most shoplifting incidents are.”

And once again the propagandists are out in force, not letting accuracy or actual data get in the way of their ignorant claims.

New York City has 8.5 million+ residents. Its crime  data will reflect its population size and the fact that it is the collection point for many of the state's mentally ill. Despie that, New York has a violent crime rate below the national level

OK. And what of the cities which are in hardcore Republican states that have significantly higher rates of violent crime? Your logic holds that we should say the crime is a reflection of the Republicans. Some of the highest violent crime rates are in Texas, Alabama and Florida.  Salt Lake City, Utah ranks first for rape and larceny theft among small-sized cities. Your logic holds that Republicans and Mormons are to blame.

The event you refer to had circumstances that necessitated an investigation which led to sufficient evidence to obtain a grand jury indictment. If there had not been a reasonable basis to prosecute for negligent homicide because of the manner in which the deceased was choked to death, the grand jury would not have indicted. The end result was that a criminal trial found that there was reasonable doubt and acquitted the accused of negligent homicide.

What are some of your other user names? Asking on behalf of those of us who are trying to keep track of the multi name members.

When did New York city obtain the right to change state and federal criminal law?

Not in Galveston where I last lived.  Of course, that may be because Galveston votes Red.  (And most households have a gun or 3, even the Black and Hispanic and Asian households)

One of my good friends ran for city office on a Dem ticket a few years ago (post Covid), and we congratulated her for doing better than just about every other Dem candidate.  She won 10% of the votes.

Yes of course as a Democrat I support murder, rape, mayhem and theft, and also I'm very much into the consumption of baby blood in the basement of pizza parlors in New York. I'm also a communist and a Marxist as are all of my democratic compatriots. Half the country supports murder and rape.

If you guys just stopped for a moment and listened to yourselves, you would realize how completely ridiculous and inane you sound, and how desperately lacking in credibility you are, when you make very uninformed and totally blinkered statements about half the country. Dumb and dumber.

Of course you're not.

But Dems vote for "equity" in justice, making allowances for certain demographics to commit crimes with impunity because they had a rough upbringing and because they're incarcerated at a higher rate than other demographics.  Which, of course is racist and completely neglects the FBI statistics that show they're incarcerated at a higher rate because they commit crimes at a higher rate.

What is your source because I verified with multiple data bases before I commented.

For example; https://www.thirdway.org/report/the-21st-century-red-state-murder-crisis

- The red state murder rate was 33% higher than the blue state murder rate in both 2021 and 2022.

- 2022 was the 23rd consecutive year that murder plagued Trump-voting states at far higher levels than Biden-voting states.

8 out of the 10 states with the highest murder rates in 2022 voted for Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2020.

- From 2000 to 2022, the average red state murder rate was 24% higher than the average blue state murder rate.

- Red states like Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama are America’s murder capitals and have had the highest three murder rates for 15 of the last 23 years.

- The excuse that sky high red state murder rates are because of their blue cities is without merit. Even after removing the county with the largest city from red states, and not from blue states, red state murder rates were still 20% higher in 2021 and 16% higher in 2022.

Simpletons  offer broad generalizations with the sole intent of  supporting their  biased political claims. The reality is that there something that people with common sense readily appreciate;

The partisanship of mayors has no detectable effect on police spending, police employment, crime, or arrests

Science Advances  15 Jan 2025 Vol 11, Issue 3 DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.adq8052

This study examined data from 400 U.S. cities over nearly three decades and found the political affiliation of mayors made little difference when it comes to crime rates and policing.

This was yet another black on asian crime and you're jumping to America is very violent country.  No, they're violent ones and the cities protect the criminals for various reasons. If American was only white and Asian the crimes rates would be the same as anywhere in Europe.

The fact that ever become anything more than a cut and dry case is the problem in and of itself. Even if he got off it doesn't matter because there's a chilling effect now. I learned the lesson, if some black guy is causing chaos on the subway then don't intervene otherwise you could be sent to jail. That's why NYC has these problems.

Didn't they de-fund the NY Transport Police?

 No. There was an additional $77 million from the state budgeted for the year for ongoing increased police presence.

The state budget makes Investments in Increased Law Enforcement Presence, Supports Further Installation of New Protective Barriers And LED Lighting. The NYC MTA has an ongoing  Fare Evasion effort that has resulted in an 11% drop in fare evasion.

Subway crime has decreased by Down 11% YTD in 2025 and 16 Percent Compared to Pre-Pandemic Levels in 2019
