Chiang Rai province is experiencing severe flooding following relentless overnight rain from Thursday into Friday morning. The downpour caused flash floods and mountain runoff, particularly impacting Phaya Mengrai and Wiang Chai districts.

Water rushed from surrounding mountains into low-lying areas, resulting in a dramatic rise in water levels. Many residents were forced to evacuate, scrambling to move their belongings to higher ground. In some locations, floodwaters reached waist height, damaging homes and sweeping away possessions.

Agricultural lands, including orchards and farmlands vital to the local economy, have been heavily affected. Large expanses are now underwater, threatening the livelihoods of many residents.

In response, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) issued emergency alerts, in coordination with mobile network providers. These alerts warned of potential flash floods in Mae Pao and Tat Khwan subdistricts in Phaya Mengrai.

Residents in vulnerable areas were advised to secure their valuables and support those at risk, such as the elderly and bedridden, while staying informed through official channels.

For emergency assistance, locals can reach out via the Line app at Line ID @1784DDPM or call the 24-hour disaster hotline at 1784.

Was quite surprised that I got this message in the morning.
