A 17-year-old teenager was fatally shot during an early morning illegal street racing gathering in Mueang District, Phatthalung province. Two others escaped injury, as police launched a manhunt using CCTV footage to trace the suspected gunman.

The incident occurred at approximately 01:40 on 28 June, near the main bus terminal junction on Asia Highway in Khao Chiak Subdistrict. Pol. Lt. Panya Kaewmusik, Deputy Inspector of Mueang Phatthalung Police Station, received a report that a teenager had been shot and rushed to the emergency room of Phatthalung Hospital. The victim was later pronounced dead.

The deceased, identified only as “A”, aged 17, had suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest. He had been riding a Honda Wave motorcycle with two other teenage friends, “B”, seated in the middle and “C”, riding pillion, as part of a convoy of dozens of motorcycles participating in a street racing event along the highway.

According to “B”, a fellow 17-year-old and survivor of the attack, a Honda PCX motorcycle of unknown colour and registration drove past the group and fired a single shot, striking “A” and causing the motorcycle to crash. Chaos erupted among the group as the victim’s friends scrambled to rush him to hospital. Witnesses reported the emergency room was briefly overwhelmed by a crowd of street racers who had gathered in concern.

“B” also told police he had heard multiple gunshots, around 2 or 3, moments before the attack but insisted that their group had not been involved in any conflict. Authorities suspect the incident may be the result of a rival group targeting the racers.

Investigators have begun examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and inspecting the crime scene, where they found tyre marks and one of the victim’s shoes. Further questioning of the surviving passengers and others in the racing group is ongoing.

Police have yet to determine a motive and are working to identify the assailant and vehicle used in the shooting. The case highlights the ongoing issue of street racing in provinces, which continues to pose dangers both to participants and the public.
