Police in Pattaya were alerted in the early hours of 3 July, to a suspected explosive device found near a go-kart racetrack in South Pattaya.

Patrol officers from Pattaya City Police Station received a report at around 02:50 of an object resembling a bomb placed beside a wall adjacent to the South Pattaya go-kart track on 3rd Road in Pattaya.

Upon receiving the alert, officers quickly coordinated with the Chonburi Provincial Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, who arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

At the site, officers discovered a round object wrapped in black tape, closely resembling an improvised explosive device. It had been left beside a roadside wall near the entrance to the go-kart facility. Police immediately placed car tyres over the item and cordoned off the area to ensure public safety.

A detailed inspection by the EOD team later confirmed the object was a homemade “ping-pong” bomb, a small, spherical improvised explosive commonly used in street altercations. The team successfully disarmed the device using a high-pressure water cannon to break the firing circuit and subsequently removed it.

Pol Sub Lt Pongphuchit Supharatchaphong, Deputy Inspector of the Chonburi Provincial Police’s EOD Unit, stated that the device is believed to have been left by a group of teenagers.

According to staff at the racetrack, a minor road crash occurred earlier in the evening near the entrance to the Laem Bali Hai Pier, which is located near the track. A group of 4 to 5 teenagers involved in the incident had reportedly gathered at the very spot where the bomb was later discovered. It is believed that the group may have abandoned the device out of fear of legal consequences when police arrived to investigate the crash.

Police investigators are examining CCTV footage in an effort to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible. Authorities confirmed that anyone found in possession of such devices will be prosecuted under the law.
