In a scandal that's gripped Thailand, a woman named Golf has confessed to intimate relationships with several monks, including having children with some. The incident centres on the respected abbot of Tri Thotsatheo Temple in Bangkok, Arch, who left the monkhood suddenly, sparking suspicions of both romantic entanglements and financial impropriety.

Arch’s unexpected departure from the monkhood in June, from a temple in Nong Khai, initially raised eyebrows. His subsequent silence with both clergy and family fuelled further speculation, resulting in an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Division of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).

The investigation uncovered that Arch was allegedly blackmailed by Golf, who claimed a romantic involvement and demanded 7.8 million Thai Baht (approximately £170,000), falsely claiming pregnancy. Upon learning the claim was untrue, Arch refused to pay, leading Golf to disclose their private interactions to senior monks, prompting his attempt to discreetly exit the monkhood and relocate to Laos. However, due to his high-profile status, secrecy proved impossible.

Golf, however, is reported to have formed similar liaisons with other wealthy monks, even having children and threatening extortion. Despite the accusations, no official complaints have been filed against her, leaving her legally uncharged. She has, however, agreed to police questioning and allowed a search of her home.

Golf reportedly admitted manipulating monks, including Arch, to fund her online gambling activities. She also allegedly provided a list of other men, including politicians, with whom she was involved, though their names remain undisclosed. Some of the monks have reportedly left the monkhood as a result.

Police continue to examine financial records from Tri Thotsatheo Temple to ascertain whether Arch misappropriated any donations for personal use. They are urging Arch to come forward and file charges of blackmail and extortion against Golf, seeking to clarify the extent of her influence and whether a broader pattern of exploitation may be at play.

With investigations ongoing, the case has cast a long shadow over the temple and its leadership, highlighting both the allure of wealth and the vulnerabilities within religious institutions. This unfolding drama is sure to keep the public closely following each new development.
