Thailand is on a mission to become a global leader in wellness and health tourism. The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, under the Ministry of Public Health, is opening wellness centres nationwide, aiming to develop the country's soft power and vitalise its economy. Collaborations with provincial health offices and entrepreneurs are key to this effort.

Director of the department’s Division of Herb Economics, Monthaka Teerachaisakul, highlighted these initiatives at a panel in Nakhon Pathom. She emphasised Thailand's commitment to international standards in health tourism, pledging to enhance both services and human resources.

The strategy is a response to the country's burgeoning health tourism sector, which earned more than 438 billion Thai Baht in 2023, marking a 119.5% increase from the previous year. With 2,189 wellness centres now established, Thailand is strengthening its reputation as a wellness destination.

The government’s long-term goal is to position Thailand as a wellness and medical service hub by implementing a 10-year strategic plan (2025-34). This initiative aims not only to improve public health but also to boost employment and foster skills development in the industry.

Supornthip Choungrangsee, Chairman of the Wellness Industry Promotion Subcommittee, pointed out that various regions have unique attractions. For instance, Nakhon Pathom, close to Bangkok, is set to become a wellness hotspot with its natural beauty and organic agriculture.

One example is the RXV Wellness Village, which offers experiences like crystal sound therapy and hydrotherapy. Its innovative cuisine, known as rainbow food, is also a highlight for visitors.

Another attraction is Patom Organic Village, which features activities such as flower painting and lotus-wrapped snack making, alongside promoting environmental sustainability through the Sampran Model.

Anak Navaraj, founder of Patom Organic Village, explained, "Our visitors can explore chemical-free agricultural sites, discover value-added products, and learn local innovations in orchid breeding."

Through initiatives blending Thailand's natural resources with modern wellness trends, Monthaka noted the government is launching campaigns to enhance Thailand's global image, appealing to today’s health-conscious travellers sustainably and proudly, embodying the Thai way.

Smacks of desperation....

Well, I'm 76 and quite well thank you, and I've never been near a 'wellness centre'.

Indeed, I had no idea such things exist.
