A night of drinking turned violent in Samut Prakan when a concerned friend trying to save his intoxicated mate from a near collision ended up being stabbed in the back, literally.

Police from Samrong Nuea Station were called to an apartment building in Soi Si Dan 3, in the Mueang district of Samut Prakan, following reports of a stabbing incident late on 11 July. Rescue personnel from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation responded to the scene.

There, on the first floor of the building, officers found a 24-year-old man from Myanmar with multiple stab wounds across his back. Despite the serious-looking injuries, the man refused hospital treatment and instead received first aid on-site.

The alleged attacker turned out to be no stranger, but his roommate and close friend, a 22-year-old fellow Myanmar national living in the same apartment. Police later located and detained the suspect in his room for further questioning.

According to witnesses and co-workers, no one knew exactly why the pair had fallen out. One colleague said he was asked by their employer to check on them after complaints from neighbours that the two were arguing loudly, disturbing others in the residence. By the time he arrived, the stabbing had already occurred.

The victim later told police that both had returned from a night of drinking. During their walk home, the younger man, heavily intoxicated, began staggering into the road, narrowly avoiding being hit by passing traffic. The victim said he instinctively pulled his friend back to safety, only to be punched in return.

After parting ways briefly, the altercation reignited once they arrived back at the apartment, ending with the suspect allegedly grabbing a knife and stabbing his friend during the argument.

Police are continuing their investigation and will determine whether formal charges will be filed.
