Polish Far-Right Politician Under Fire for Denying Auschwitz Gas Chambers

Polish prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into Grzegorz Braun, a far-right member of the European Parliament, after he publicly claimed that the gas chambers at Auschwitz were a "fake." His controversial statement has provoked outrage across Poland and beyond, reigniting concerns about antisemitism and Holocaust denial among nationalist figures.

Braun made the incendiary remarks during an interview on Poland’s Wnet radio, where he stated, “ritual murder is a fact, and such a thing as Auschwitz with its gas chambers is unfortunately a fake,” according to Polish news agency PAP. The interview was immediately cut short by the reporter.

The statement drew immediate condemnation. Piotr Cywinski, director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, announced plans to file a formal complaint, saying, “Denying the fact that gas chambers existed is not only a manifestation of anti-Semitism and an ideology of hatred; in Poland it is also a crime.” Under Polish law, denying Nazi crimes is a prosecutable offense.

A spokesperson for the Warsaw district prosecutor's office, Piotr Antoni Skiba, confirmed that authorities had launched a preliminary investigation into Braun’s comments. This move signals that the government is taking the issue seriously, amid fears that such rhetoric threatens Poland’s international reputation and historical accountability.

Braun has a history of inflammatory behavior. In 2023, he extinguished Hanukkah candles in the Polish parliament using a fire extinguisher during a national commemoration, an act widely condemned as antisemitic. He also ran for president earlier this year and captured over 6% of the vote in the first round, raising concerns about the traction of far-right ideologies among parts of the electorate.

His recent remarks also referenced “ritual murder,” a long-debunked and dangerous conspiracy theory rooted in medieval Europe, which falsely accused Jews of killing Christian children for use in religious rituals. Historians universally reject the notion as baseless, and recognize it as a form of antisemitic propaganda.

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned Braun’s statements, calling them “a disgrace.” He emphasized the need to safeguard Poland’s image, stating, “we must do everything so that no one in the world associates Poland with such people, such faces and such actions.”

Braun’s actions weren’t limited to rhetoric. On the same day his radio interview aired, he appeared in the northeastern town of Jedwabne, where he and a group attempted to block the departure of cars carrying participants in a ceremony marking the 1941 massacre of Jews by Polish neighbors under Nazi occupation. Among those delayed was Poland’s chief rabbi. Police had to intervene to clear the road.

The Auschwitz death camp, located in southern Poland under Nazi occupation during World War II, was the site of the industrial murder of approximately 1.1 million people—most of them Jews—using gas chambers. Others murdered there included Poles, Roma, Soviet POWs, and gay people.

As the world continues to combat Holocaust denial and antisemitism, Braun’s remarks are being seen not just as an isolated incident, but as part of a broader, troubling trend. Polish authorities, museum officials, and national leaders appear committed to holding him accountable.

You are right.

You cannot have a rational discussion with a fundamentalist.

How do these people even get an audience?

The guy needs to be removed from his position, he can even take a drive over to Auschwitz and see for himself.

As far as I know the only picture of a homicidal gas chamber is the small seldom used one in Auschwitz 1 stammlager

GasAndKrema1 - Copy.jpg

There were four other larger gaskammer  in Auschwitz-Birkenau all of them were destroyed by the guards and are ruins, but blueprints, photos and personal accounts exist.

As far as I know there are no picture of the underground undressing area and gas chambers but this is one of the few pictures that survive of the ovens at Krema 3

There's a long tradition of anti-semitism in Poland.

Yes. I have family from Poland, not Jewish, but I still have a sad heart for them. Nazis are one of my hatreds.

Yes, and only fools , weak people, aka sheep, or like minded Nazis will agree.

When you see a weed poking out of soil pull it out. So easy. If you ignore it you’ll get a massive field. Harder to control. On a related note the pm is Donald Tusk? Seriously? A cross between Donald Trump and Elon Musk?

While a coincidence, sort of, in name, politically very very different.

Through shared beliefs in antisemitism.  It's been an "ideology" for 2,000 years.  In its modern form, antisemitism is a shared characteristic of  some adherents of both the Right and Left political camps.  Grzegorz Braun, just like many leftists, accuses Jews of committing genocide in Gaza.

During a minute’s silence honouring Holocaust victims, Braun, who was elected to the European Parliament from the list of Poland’s far-right Confederation (Konfederacja), shouted remarks including “let’s pray for the victims of the Jewish genocide in Gaza” and “thank you everybody for praying”, reported Polish broadcaster TVN24.

If you want to better understand Holocaust denial, here's a video that explains it in three minutes.  WARNING:  It contains disturbing images.

I was being a little facetious. I know there's a lot of them around, and the sheep will always have a leader. Some of my my favorite films are Defiance, Uprising, Schindler's List and the Pianist. I've hated the Nazis since I was old enough to understand what they did, and that people are still around that hate, which is taught in the homes first.

F-me. these people exist.

Just unreal. :bah:

Ten years ago,  Grzegorz Braun was regarded as an eccentric individual on the fringes of Polish rightwing politics.  Since then. he has gathered enough support to win seats in both the European Parliament and the lower chamber of the Polish Parliament.  He has steadily gained political strength.

But the authorities in Poland are taking him as a serious threat. The Polish and European Parliaments have lifted his immunity so a Polish prosecutor can pursue changes against Braun.  He will be indicted for unlawful actions, not his statements about Jews.

It's important the Polish government takes action against him.  Otherwise, the risk is high that Braun's hardcore antisemitism will become "normalized" in the minds of Polish voters.   The surge in antisemitism which Europe and the U.S. have seen in recent years is largely down to people accepting antisemitic tropes as valid opinions.

Jews can never stop reminding the world that "Never again is now!"

It may be that some people are accusing Jews of committing genocide, but most are accusing Israelis of committing genocide.

Yes, there was a trial on that subject at the ICC and Israel didn't get found to be committing genocide

He is going to pay for his stupid, ignorant, ill considered statement; hopefully with a sound thrashing, politically of course; and after that a good hammering behind the pub.

I am asking you if the Israelis who are accused of committing genocide are  Jews or if they belong to a different ethno-religious group.  Not all citizens of Israeli are Jews.  In 2025, about 21% of Israel's citizens are Arabs; roughly 75%  are Jews and about 4% non-Arab Christians, Druze and others.

Given that only Jewish citizens of Israel are subject to the draft, and that the governmental officials in charge of the campaign in Gaza are Jewish, it happens to be the case that they are mostly Jewish. But the accusations are based on what they are doing, not that they happen to be Jewish.

Bernard Madoff happened to be Jewish. Was denouncing him an act of anti-Semitism?
