A Chinese crew member died at sea after being critically injured in a crane incident aboard a cargo vessel off the coast of Surat Thani province. Despite urgent rescue efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported to medical facilities.

At approximately 5:15 on 15 July, Rear Admiral Natthaphon Sinphunphon, Deputy Director of the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre (Thai-MECC) for Surat Thani, dispatched a high-speed patrol vessel, Thai-MECC 4003, to assist following a distress call from the National Institute for Emergency Medicine.

The incident occurred in open waters near Koh Paluai, Don Sak District, Surat Thani, at coordinates 9°36.99’ N, 99°25.00’ E. The vessel involved, Ocean Victory, a Chinese-flagged cargo ship, was en route from Indonesia to China and had made a scheduled stop in Surat Thani to load cargo.

According to reports, the victim, identified as Mr. Wang Jiejun, 56, was struck by a falling crane motor, which crushed the lower part of his torso and his left leg. Despite the crew’s efforts and the swift arrival of the rescue team, he died from his injuries at the scene.

Thai-MECC coordinated with relevant authorities to begin an investigation and facilitate the formal procedures for forensic examination and repatriation of the deceased’s body.
