Letterman was the best. A giant among late show hosts.

Colbert is a wet tissue next to him.

  • If press were required to always provide truth, it would be the end of Fox and all of those far right Alex Jones type. I didn't see the interview, but if CBS wanted to edit the piece, they could

  • bingo another blow to freedom of speech.

  • Hope you don't mind me adding to your above post. No ratings, no advertising, monotonous, boring, preachy, condescending, radical woke left propaganda.

Paramount (owner of CBS etc) caved to Trump admin over some 60 minutes story, coughed up pile of money and some unknown agreements, maybe PSAs for Trump charities etc rather than fight in court.. So much for freedom of speech defending. Why did Paramount cave? Big sales deal coming up in near future & Trump's goons might nix the deal.

Colbert called out Paramount for their cowardice and failure to defend freedom of the press. Colbert is highest rated late night TV... some rumor about difficulty selling ads... did CBS try to reason? No. He heard about it just about same time as public.

Anyway, that's what I've heard/read so far....

To lie & edit an interview with a presidential candidate IR nit freedom of the press, its election interference.

They settled because they knew theyd lose.

But font let your DJT derangement get in the way of the law

I am surprised Colbert still shows his face after that cringeworthy vaccine song.

Good riddance to the Democrat activist unfunny tit.

He knew this was going to happen when making the big fat bribe commentary.

10 months of shows to go.. his team will be gloves off now and it will be interesting to see how far they push it.

I've been a big fan of Colbert over the years starting with his parody show before Late Night. For years I saw his Late Night as a must watch but over time I.watch it much less. It does have great ratings though so in that sense the cancellation is very surprising news. A while back Bill Maher of Real Time which is still must see tv for me revealed he is not a fan of Colbert. Why? He said because he's a totally predictable voice of the liberal establishment. Hard to disagree with that.

2 boring lefties. Letterman was a centreist.

Yes he played the middle and just did comedy. These woke hosts are awful.

Steve Kroft, formerly a CBS employee on 60 Minutes, explains the background (cued up)

He did make it look like it was his fault when he accused his employer Paramount of paying a bribe. Clearly his ideological zealotry clouded his judgement.

Though it may have been the case that he already knew he'd be let go by then and the bribe comment was just petulant retribution in his mind.

Either way, like all Democrats, extremely poor judgement.

But okay if Trump interviews are edited, esp on subjects like his long time friend Epstein. Got it. Election interference? you must be joking.

They settled because FCC must approve sale & FCC now lap dog of Trum

Show me the law that says independent media businesses cannot edit interviews. What do you think sound bites are? Insipid to assume such a law, but prove me wrong

Talk about Democrats clutching at straws, the edited Harris interview was regarding a direct question about israel support and the war, they didnt just omit 2 words, they completely changed her answer to show something totally different.

Get a grip.

They settled to avoid a drawn out case which would have probably put them under the spotlight for more scrutiny.

Johnny Carson brought in 15 million. Colbert, Kimmel and smiley boy 6 million.

Funny how the tedious late show obsession with Trump killed off late shows.

You gotta laugh.

And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. His idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults - he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness. There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. The world does not.

How many did JC get on youtube or twitter? I'll guess none. In case you haven't noticed, or don't care to take into account, this is now an age when streaming. HBO, tons of web sites etc are vying for our time. SO it is disingenuous or just plain ignorant to compare apples and oranges.

And your conclusion about late show obsession with Trump killed them is plain unsupported and charitably ignorant

Johnny Carson included political satirical political jokes in his repertoire. He made jokes about carter and his brother. Did silly impression of Reagan. No political repercussion and his show lasted 30 years. Trump is a thin skin authoritarian who silence media and CBS caved.

Colbert's impact on late-night television is undeniable. Since taking over from David Letterman in 2015, he has become a beloved figure. The "Late Show" franchise itself has been a CBS staple for over thirty years, making this decision even more significant.

NBC
Jack Parr - great
Steve Allen - fantastic
Johnny Carson - epic
Jay Leno - had his moments
Conan O'Brien - who?
Jimmy Fallon - who?

CBS
David Letterman - had his moments
Stephen Colbert - who?

But it was always good natured with Carson, just fun. And even-handed. It wasn't this pathological  zealotry and hatred which Kimmel, Colbert et al have for Trump.

Clearly this has turned the viewers off. It has shrunk viewership for late night to the extent that late night has become unviable. Trump must be laughing. Another win.

Bottom line is that Trump insults and mock other people but does not like it when comedians satirically joked about him. As a leader and public figure, he should behave like other former Presidents who took those jokes aimed at them at their stride.
