In fairness and based on my own observations, the ritual is observed, the appearance of the money/gold etc is portrayed on the day  but its usually just for show, and is given back to the couple after the event.

  • Let's be honest, for most, its what the girl and her family think they can get away with, relying on the foreigners romantic notions and stories of "tradition".   I paid ZERO! I dont believe

  • Lovely 17 year old daughter is probably worth something.

  • Education is mostly wasted on females anyway.

"usually" is the worrying word here. I'm pretty sure the mother of my gf would pocket the money without blinking an eye.

More trolling bickering etc removed. You people need to stop making things personal or yet another topic will bite the dust.

I wonder how much Jeff Bezos paid for Wendy Sanchez.

He paid 50M USD just for the wedding.

On top of that he hired her aircraft film company to disguise his gf poaching initially.

I wonder if her family got payments.

Bezos is simping like there's no tomorrow for a 50 plus woman. It's almost incredible.

He can afford it.

Yah, but why go for a 50+ woman?

He could have a 25 year old.

It makes no sense.

Billionaires are weird. You have to be weird to chase that kind of wealth.

These sinsot threads always attract posters boasting they paid nothing. You should not if marrying a bar girl, previously married or has kids. If a so called decent women with a good education and you are asked for a reasonable amount and refuse, how is that respecting your wife to be culture? seems like petty arrogance to me. It's often just for show anyway and is not 'buying people' it's a traditional expression of being able to look after the bride as well as compensating the parents. These days it's just traditional. Of course if the demanding parents are taking the piss with silly amounts, refusing to hand all or some back then it's not the right family to be marrying into in the first place.

Thats what I figure. Thais will keep 100k. 200 nights in a hotel. 40 cities, 5 nights each. Id rather visit 40 cities.

If you have enough money you can have both.

why does it have to be one or the other?

I think I would go for a virgin for life over a 8 month holiday if I had to choose.

100k is not much. It is less than my monthly spend living in Phuket.

I don’t think 3,000 per day is a big spender in Phuket to be honest.

I see a lot of the Russians spending a lot more than me.

There is a lot to do here, and nothing is cheap.

If you are living up in the sticks with no good restaurants where everyone is in bed at 9 pm then you probably would struggle to spend 3,000 per day.

I could easily spend that here just on breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I will pay whatever the official Thai sinsod calculator tells me.

You travel a lot but have a wife or girlfriend. So she doesn’t have a job, so you are paying for her also I assume?

Since I have been here I have never had a month under 100,000. Some months have been quite a bit more.

Phuket is the best place in Thailand, but not if you have a small budget, it isn’t the best value.

Not many hotels worth staying in in Phuket for 1000 THB per night.

Or most other places in the world.

Marriage is a piece of paper. Get dressed up. Spend loads of money. 50% likely it ends. Strange custom. Never understood it.

Good if you want to have kids.

Sinsod and marriage is the topic. Try that.

You asked for something intelligent, which I did, as you are not interested in sinsod...🤔

90% ending if a bar girl, has no advantages other than a marriage extension

Each to their own. People either make their own choices or follow customs. Id rather make my own path.

None of your business, besides, you are not interested in paying Sinsod, you told us so......🙄...........

You stick to chatting up the staff in 7/11....:coffee1:

I reckon the OP should contact the Thai Cultural Minister and have The Official Sin Sot Guide published, it will then help Thais and foreigners from falling into any financial trap, 'forewarned is forearmed'.

Topic is sinsot not Phuket nor restaurants.
