A two-year-old boy has died and his father is in critical condition after being viciously attacked by a swarm of hornets in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The incident occurred at around 16:00 on 19 July near an abandoned rice mill in Ban Han Kao, Bua Yai District. The young boy, named Akhin aged 2 years and 8 months, was riding his bicycle with a group of friends when the hornets suddenly emerged from a large nest believed to be hidden within the mill’s structure.

Witnesses reported that without warning, the aggressive insects descended on the children playing nearby. Akhin was stung multiple times and collapsed unconscious. The other children fled in panic.

A child who witnessed the attack ran to alert Akhin’s father, who immediately rushed to the scene. Upon finding his son motionless on the ground, he embraced the boy in a desperate attempt to protect him, only to be swarmed and stung himself.

Both were rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Akhin succumbed to his injuries at around 22:00 that evening. His father remains in a critical condition.

The site of the incident, an old, disused rice mill, is known to be frequented by local children but had not previously been identified as housing a hornet nest. Authorities are expected to assess the area and take appropriate pest control measures.

Local officials have urged residents to be cautious around abandoned buildings and to report any sightings of hornet nests to prevent further incidents.
