Thailand is considering recalling its ambassador from Phnom Penh amid escalating tensions with Cambodia. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced today that moves are being made to avoid an armed conflict, especially near the Ta Muen Thom ruins in Surin. Phumtham plans to dispatch two companies of crowd control police to the border in pursuit of peace.

This decision follows a weekend influx of over 7,000 Thai and Cambodian tourists to the contested site. Phumtham discussed using police to avert military confrontations and demonstrate Thailand's commitment to peace. He emphasised that a police presence would deter conflicts while protecting civilians.

Should any unrest arise, stationed Thai police could swiftly respond, ensuring military forces are not prematurely involved. The acting PM reiterated the importance of keeping military troops ready to safeguard national sovereignty at the border.

Expressing a firm yet measured stance, Phumtham stressed Thailand's dedication to restraint, avoiding actions that might provoke Cambodia to approach the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Notably, Thailand does not recognise the ICJ's jurisdiction.

Phumtham conveyed a desire to prevent losses on both sides, indirectly referencing the current global climate of conflict. The situation remains tense as diplomatic strategies continue to unfold.
