A manhunt ended in arrest on the morning of 31 July, after a 28-year-old man allegedly stabbed his former father-in-law to death in a chilling early morning attack in Huay Yai. The suspect, reportedly angered by his ex-wife’s refusal to reconcile, is believed to have carried out the murder in a fit of rage and under the influence.

Police received a call at 04:35, reporting a serious assault at a residence in Soi Thetsaban 1/15, Huay Yai subdistrict. Officers from Huay Yai Police Station, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Sitthisak Thornsawat, responded along with rescue volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation.

At the scene, police discovered the body of Mr Siwapong Boonprasert, 54, a construction contractor, lying in a pool of blood on his bed. He had sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest, inflicted by a 15-centimetre kitchen knife. His wife and three young grandchildren, who were present in the room, were left traumatised but unharmed.

Police confirmed the suspect as Mr Phanupong, also known as “Tod,” a 28-year-old swimming pool technician and former son-in-law of the victim. He had fled the scene on a motorcycle but was later apprehended at his mother’s residence in the Nong Prue area. As tensions escalated at the arrest site, police were forced to intervene quickly to prevent an attempted mob attack by grieving relatives.

According to the victim’s wife, the suspect entered the house uninvited and walked straight into the bedroom before fatally stabbing her husband. He then fled without uttering a word. She stated that her husband had never been in conflict with the suspect and expressed disbelief at the violent attack.

The victim’s daughter, who was not at home during the incident, revealed that she had ended her relationship with the suspect over a month ago due to his aggressive behaviour and drug use. She added that he had previously attempted to break into the house and suspected he had intended to harm her, but upon finding her absent, turned his rage on her father.

Another knife was later found in the daughter’s room, further indicating that the suspect may have premeditated an attack on her.

Police continue to investigate the incident and Initial charges have been filed for murder.
