New employers don't accept 1 month notice

Featured Replies

I'm actually sick of this, I've been having interviews and responses from new teaching jobs, they all want you to start immediately, yet at the same time, want you to have years of teaching experience. Every time I tell them I need to do a month's notice, I fail the interview or they ghost me, so they basically want someone who is an experienced teacher, and at the same time, unemployed at the time of applying.

I get everything is supply and demand, but Jesus, I'm really starting to consider if I should just quit my job at this point, since no employer seems to be able to hold out for a month.

What's your thoughts on this?

Never, ever, give up the security of a monthly paycheque.

Can you explain to your employer your predicament and give them the opportunity to line up your replacement one out, one in? ...or, if push comes to shove, walk out on them, bearing in mind the possible consequences.....no references?

I could, they also already know I'm trying to leave however, as I resigned before but quickly cancelled it after I found out the new employer was an illegal company. So IMO they may already be lining someone up without telling me, and will sack me when the new guy's ready.

I'm considering the quick walk out too, it's just against my programming, because of the reference consequence as you said, I did my only 2 years of teaching at this school, would be a shame to destroy that reference.

Yes...agree....references carry a huge amount of weight.....so a bit of a tightrope to walk.

Just got feedback from my latest interviewer, told me I was a great fit for the school and interview went well, but they've chosen another candidate as she could start work within the next week.

So I'm right, I can't get a new job because employers can't wait for 1 month notice periods, I'm screwed basically. I'm just gonna go home next year do my pgce then apply while jobless

Why not apply before the new school year starts as then you have time for your 1 month notice.

The problem is your own fault.

Consider that aschool that s hiring is looking to fill a hole during this teachng yer which is currently going on.

Your school is not ngoing to let you go as they then have to find someone to replace you.

You did not say are you on a WP or aren ou free lance?

You are beter to wait until September

Because then many schools aren't hiring, last week before school starts or first week after school starts seems to be the point where many schools start their hiring process...

And there is an endemic problem when it comes to planing here, not just when hiring foreign teachers.

So, now you know -

It's called cultural differences - hopefully you learn, there are many of them.

There was a good piece of advice which by the way is pure common sense, wait until the end of the school year/academic year.

In the middle of a school year, if a school is looking for a teacher, it's for immediate entry.

They most likely got a problem with a teacher.

The reason for this article is to recommend that all foreign teachers read the Labour Protection Act carefully, here:

or here:

I worked in education in Thailand from 2003 to 2017, then I retired at 65 (last employer: Asian University).
