Police and local authorities in Chiang Khan, Loei Province, have arrested two men in possession of nearly four million methamphetamine pills in the car park of a popular shopping mall. The dramatic early-morning operation, which took place on August 3, followed intelligence suggesting a major drug shipment was being transported through the region.

The suspects, identified only as Mr. Saran 29, and Mr. Sarawut 30, were apprehended inside a grey MG pickup truck bearing Ayutthaya number plates. The vehicle was found to contain a staggering 3,820,000 methamphetamine tablets.

Authorities had been monitoring the pair after receiving a tip-off that a large consignment of narcotics was being smuggled across the border from a neighbouring country via the Mekong River, entering Thailand near Ban Huai Suak in Bu Hom subdistrict, Chiang Khan district. The drugs were then allegedly loaded into the pickup truck for delivery to provinces in central Thailand.

However, the suspects made a stop at a well-known department store in Chiang Khan, where officers moved in and arrested both men at the scene. They are currently being held for questioning as investigators work to trace the wider network involved.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Royal Thai Police and Chiang Khan district administrative officials. Authorities say the case represents a blow to the drug trafficking routes that run through Thailand’s northeastern border regions.

Further investigations are ongoing.
