In a significant crackdown, the Ladan Yao Task Force, part of Thailand's Surasi Forces, foiled a major illegal cigarette smuggling operation today, capturing a suspect transporting contraband worth nearly 10 million Thai Baht.

The operation unfolded at the 9th Infantry Division headquarters under the command of Major General Atsadawut Panyarachun. He coordinated with Kanchanaburi Governor Athit San Intra after intelligence revealed plans to smuggle goods from a neighbouring country's border through Highway 323.

Colonel Phannasak Phreeophanich, leading the Ladan Yao Task Force, alongside Deputy Commander Colonel Piyanes Phatthrasasvatwong and local Border Patrol Police, set up strategic checkpoints to intercept the smuggling attempt.

At 10pm on August 4, officers stationed at the Nam Krik checkpoint in Nong Lu, Sangkhla Buri district, observed a suspicious pickup truck with registration กพ 7514 Kanchanaburi. The vehicle, headed towards Thong Pha Phum district, was flagged down for inspection.

The driver, 29-year-old Piraphon, showed signs of anxiety when approached. A brown tarpaulin concealed numerous boxes behind the driver’s seat, prompting further investigation by the authorities.

The search unveiled over 1,030 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, hidden both in the truck's cabin and cargo bed. These goods were valued at over 9.27 million Thai Baht, highlighting a significant tax evasion operation.

Upon questioning, Piraphon admitted he was hired for 2,000 Thai Baht by an individual known only as Auan. His instructions were to deliver the cargo to La San School in Sangkhla Buri subdistrict, after which others would distribute the cigarettes inland for illegal sale.

Authorities have seized the contraband and taken Piraphon to Sangkhla Buri Police Station for further investigation and legal procedures. This operation marks a significant win in curbing smuggling activities in the region.

Such decisive actions underscore the diligence and cooperation between military, police, and local officials in tackling illegal trade, serving as a deterrent for future smuggling attempts.
