Buriram province on 5 August, marked the official launch of the “Chumhed Municipality Volunteer Police” initiative aimed at bolstering community efforts to combat drug abuse and related crime under the national “No Drugs No Dealers” policy.

The opening ceremony took place at the multipurpose dome of Chumhed Municipality in Mueang Buriram District, with Mr Kriangsak Somjit, Deputy Governor of Buriram, presiding over the event. Senior police officers including Pol. Maj. Gen. Narongsak Promtha, Commander of Buriram Provincial Police, along with local police chiefs and Chum Het’s Mayor, Lt. Col. Somchai Piromchat, were present alongside representatives from various sectors.

The project seeks to build a network of volunteer assistants to support police efforts in preventing and suppressing drug trafficking and crime within the community. It also aims to enhance cooperation between government agencies and residents in a concrete and practical manner.

Chumhed Municipality, in partnership with Mueang Buriram Police Station and related agencies, organised training for 186 community leaders and residents from 5–6 August. The project is funded by the municipality with a budget of 200,000 baht.

In his opening remarks, Mayor Somchai highlighted the ongoing severity of drug problems in the region. He noted that the government’s intensified anti-drug crackdown through the “No Drugs No Dealers” strategy forms the foundation of this initiative. The programme emphasises integrated collaboration across all sectors and active participation by local people.

The event also featured demonstrations of tactical techniques to subdue aggressive individuals using forked sticks, aimed at equipping volunteers and officers with practical skills for emergency response.

The atmosphere was lively, with participation from administrative officials, health officers, community leaders, government representatives and local citizens, showcasing a strong community spirit united against drug issues.

This project reflects Buriram’s commitment to raising public safety standards and creating drug-free environments through grassroots cooperation.
