Thailand Lifts Poker Ban, Paving Way for Sport Recognition and Global Events

Thailand is moving to legalise poker as a skill-based sport, with Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai signing an order to revoke long-standing bans. The decision aims to align Thailand with international standards and open doors for hosting global poker events. Authorities will review outdated laws, including the 1943 Playing Cards Act and the 1958 Interior Ministry order, to allow regulated competitions. While initial events may be approved case by case, a dedicated committee will draft legislative updates to ensure legal compliance. This strategic shift redefines Thailand’s gambling landscape, positioning poker as a legitimate sport and potential draw for international tournaments.
