In a remarkable tale of survival, a former traffic officer narrowly escaped serious injury following a dramatic road accident on the Udon Thani-Sakon Nakhon Road in Udon Thani province. The crash, which took place in the Mueang Nong Han district, saw a pickup truck flip multiple times, leaving bystanders astonished at the driver's survival.

The mishap happened at around 8pm on 18 August, sparking immediate response from local police and emergency services. Upon arrival, they discovered a white Isuzu pickup, bearing the registration number ป 5179 Udon Thani, overturned and severely damaged. Yet, in an incredible twist, the driver, identified as 32-year-old Phong Sakon, emerged with only minor injuries.

Phong, a former traffic officer affectionately known as Oung, attributed his survival to a spiritual amulet he had been wearing for two years. Smiling despite the ordeal, he held the amulet aloft in gratitude, recounting how he was transporting tiles from Udon Thani city for a project involving a chicken coop and fish pond at his garden in Mueang Nong Han.

A close friend shared insights into Phong's recent early retirement from the police force, highlighting the driver’s usual careful nature. However, on the day of the accident, circumstances altered unexpectedly. The vehicle reportedly swerved, losing control and skidding approximately 150 metres before colliding with a tree and a traffic sign—both left damaged in the crash’s wake.

Miraculously, Phong suffered only a minor head injury, swiftly treated at Udon Thani Centre Hospital. Friends and onlookers spoke of the protective power of Phong’s ivory necklace and revered amulet, believing these artefacts played a crucial role in shielding him from greater harm.

The incident has cast a spotlight on safety concerns along this stretch of road. Residents pointed out the inadequate street lighting where the accident occurred. While most of the thoroughfare boasts sufficient illumination, this specific segment remains dark, leading to frequent accidents.

Community members are now urging the Nong Han Highway Department 2 to install additional lighting, hoping to enhance safety and prevent further incidents.

As Phong recovers, the community reflects on both the fragility and resilience of life, marvelling at his unlikely escape from what could have been a far graver outcome. Their calls for improved road conditions underscore a shared commitment to preventing future tragedies.

This extraordinary incident, blending coincidence with faith, leaves readers pondering the forces that might intervene in moments of peril. Meanwhile, as authorities respond to safety concerns, Phong’s story will continue to resonate in Udon Thani, symbolising hope and survival against the odds.
