I got this one:

HAFELE หม้อทอดไร้น้ำมันดิจิตอล 5.7 ลิตร / Digital air fryer oven 5.7 L | Lazada.co.th

I've had it for more than 2 years now, used daily. It has a detachable tray, which is useful, and it's big enough (5.7 litres) to cook most things, including baking cakes.
Highly recommended.

Yes, pathetic.

Given how short your memory is, you should worry more about yourself.

That's impossible. You should see the list of supplements I take...

It's a term used on the internet to avoid AI-based censorship.   i.e Youtube.

Things you can't cook in the useless unaliving machine, aka "air fryer" ( as if it fries the air, lol):

Liquids & Batters
  • Wet Batters: Wet batter won't set properly and will drip through the basket, creating a sticky mess and potentially burning the base of your air fryer.

  • Saucy Dishes: Soups, stews, or anything with a lot of liquid is not suitable for an air fryer, as the liquid will splatter everywhere and make a mess.

  • Excessive Marinades: Very wet or watery marinades can make the food soggy instead of crispy.

Grains & Dry Foods
  • Raw Rice and Grains: Grains like rice and quinoa require boiling water to soften and cook, which an air fryer cannot provide.

  • Pasta: Like rice, pasta needs to be cooked in boiling water.

  • Popcorn: Air fryers are not designed to pop popcorn and are not hot enough to make it happen.

Delicate & Small Items
  • Leafy Greens: Delicate greens like spinach and kale can easily burn or fly around in the high-speed air circulation.

  • Loose Breadcrumbs: Foods with loose breading can get blown around, leading to uneven cooking.

  • Small or Delicate Fish: These can break apart or become overcooked in the air fryer's strong airflow.

Large Items & Baked Goods
  • Whole Roasts & Poultry: Large cuts of meat or whole chickens often do not cook evenly in an air fryer.

  • Raw Cheese: Cheese will melt and create a sticky, hard-to-clean mess.

  • Uncooked Grains & Beans: Items like dry beans also require boiling in water to cook.

  • Delicate Baked Goods: Items like tarts and large cakes aren't suited for air frying.

Other Foods
  • Raw Vegetables:
Root vegetables may not soften all the way, and raw produce can become soggy.

  • Foods That Require Soaking or Boiling:
Anything that needs to be boiled or submerged in water, like grains and pasta, is not suitable for an air fryer.

I bought one of these when I worked in China a few years ago and it was a godsend. No more frying pans or 'George Foreman' type grills which splattered the walls with fat.

Actually frying is the only thing it doesn't do, it roasts and grills. It's basically a fan-assisted convection oven with an induction hob above the tray. The induction hob grills the food which is why you need to shake / turn / flip halfway through.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned halogen ovens, which are actual mini-ovens. They cook with an infrared light bulb. They're more versatile than air fryers and less expensive. I like to bake -- or I used to anyway before I cut out sugar -- and they're great for that, cookies, cakes, pies, anything, You can cook a whole chicken and the vegetables at the same time on a second tier. Also pizza, as the temperature goes up to 250 C.

There is somewhat of a learning curve at they cook a little bit differently from coventional ovens but they're not that hard to master. And no PFAS, as there's no non-stick coating. Avoid the cheapest models but you can pick up a very servicable halogen oven for around 1,000 baht.

You still need a frying pan for eggs, no?

What about burgers? Can you cook decent burgers in this thing? Will it have a bit of a sear?

Sure you need a frying pan for fried eggs 🤪

Boiled or omelettes could be done in theory. I use an egg steamer for those.

Cheese on toast comes out nice though. 😂

Yes, for burgers or anything similarly shaped you need to flip them halfway through or they'll be grilled hard on the top and soft on the bottom. Quarter pounder takes about 15 mins

I mix 150 gm of minced beef with an egg. Cooks right through, although it's half the thickness of a burger.

I've had both air-fryer chicken wings and regular deep fried chicken wings, the latter are far more delicious

If you want to get fatter and arteries more clogged up, keep deep frying

Never used an air fryer before.

Just did a quick search on Lazada and they're cheap ... some are 450 Baht. Are they any good?

Anyone cook with these things?

What do you cook in them? Do they replace conventional ovens?

Is any cooking oil required?

What's the physics of these things? Like HOW do they work?

Recommended?

They're just a miniature fan oven. They rock. They make the best crispy bacon in the world.

Actually the body needs a ceratin amount of fat.

Whether you get fat is determined by the overall calories you eat, not whether you use an air-fryer. If you have weight problems you're much better off restricting calories than using an air-fryer.

I don't think weight gain is the main issue.

All restaurants are using unhealthy cooking oills. This increases disease risk. It will damage your arteries, for one thing.

The unhealthy cooking oils are listed here:

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/why-fried-foods-are-bad#TOC_TITLE_HDR_6

The air fryer is mentioned in the above article. It's way healthier to eat air fryer food that food cooked in bad oils, but not for weight gain issues. I think the air fryer was invented to reduce fried foods as it approximates the taste of fried foods?

But if you fry at home with healthy stable cooking oils, it's fine. You can make fries in beef tallow on a skillet. Cooking eggs in butter (especially at low heat) is perfectly fine. By all means, use the air fryer to avoid the local restaurant fried chicken, but it doesn't mean you should stop using all fats.

McDonald's used to cook their fries in beef tallow, but switched based on fake science.

Real science now supports beef tallow as a healthy fat and these other cooking oils as harmful.

I think the real reason they switched was to save money as beef tallow is very expensive and drives up costs.

Or ... believe whatever you want.

The other day I ordered fries from a food stand in a market. At the end of eating I had the most disgusting oil taste in my mouth.

I really don't know what they use here, but it's got a weird after taste.

So what? It cooks protein quite well for me. Fish, beef, chicken, hamburger and pork.

As for vegetables and eggs, I have an induction cooker and pan for that. Who wants to cook cheese?

Tut tut. You did forget eggs in your diatribe.

All cooking oils degrade into rancidity with heat. Some degrade faster than others. Coconut oil is the most stable.

If there is any copper at all in the system, it catalyzes breakdown.

The bad taste is caused by the long chain esters ( i.e oils ) being cleaved into short chain fatty acids, such as butyric acid, which tastes foul.

Rancidity is measured by peroxide value. Anything above 10 units is on the way out. I'm guessing many vendors run up to 50 or 100, cooking oil in a big bath is expensive to replace.

Here endeth the chemistry lesson.

He is right.

During the Great Depression, poor Australians depended on rabbits as their only source of protein. They became fat-deficient, because rabbit meat is one of the leanest meats.

Fat is essential in hormone production, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E and K.
