Intoxicated Soldier Causes Stir at Thai-Cambodia Border

In a surprising twist during a tense ceasefire monitoring mission, a Cambodian soldier's inebriated outburst at the Chong Arn Ma checkpoint in Ubon Ratchathani has put a spotlight on ongoing border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. Maj Gen Kran particularly highlighted the dissemination of misinformation, which he stressed was as damaging as physical aggression in fuelling ongoing tensions.

Provocations reportedly included the use of surveillance drones and increased troop presence in disputed areas. Maj Gen Kran urged the international observers to address these issues critically, emphasising the corrosive effect of misinformation on peace efforts.

Brig Gen Samsul acknowledged the comprehensive briefing given by Thai military officials, expressing the observer team’s commitment to relaying their findings accurately. He underlined that their mission was observational, not inquisitorial, although the incident with the Cambodian soldier clearly showcased lapses in discipline and professional conduct.
