Thailand has been selected to host the prestigious Global Wellness Summit (GWS) in 2026, a significant opportunity for the nation to spotlight its traditional health and beauty offerings on a global platform.

The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine has confirmed that this esteemed event will take place in Phuket. Deputy Director-General Somsak Kreechai highlighted that Thailand's selection underscores the international community's confidence in the country's wellness potential. Hosting GWS 2026 will place Thailand at the forefront of health and beauty innovation, particularly through the lens of traditional medicine.

The GWS is renowned for being a high-level gathering where experts, entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers converge to exchange insights and shape the wellness industry's future. Past hosts have included global economic hubs like the United States and Italy, placing Thailand in esteemed company. The upcoming summit in 2023 will occur in Dubai, UAE, under the theme ‘Longevity Through a Wellness Lens’.

Hosting GWS 2026 allows Thailand not only to nominate keynote speakers but also to contribute significantly to the summit’s academic content. This platform provides an invaluable opportunity to showcase Thai traditional medicine, herbal remedies, and the globally admired Thai massage. This exposure is expected to enhance international recognition and solidify Thailand’s standing as a regional health leader.

Somsak estimates the summit will generate over 100 million baht in revenue for Thailand, with added economic benefits flowing from wellness tourism and associated industries such as hospitality and services. Beyond immediate financial gains, the event is seen as a catalyst for the government's soft power initiatives, aiming to boost long-term growth in Thailand’s health and wellness sectors.

The summit offers a prime venue for business networking, investment opportunities, and international collaboration in health policy. It is anticipated to spark new projects and foster the systematic development of Thai wellness professionals.

Somsak emphasised the expanded role of the Public Health Ministry in not only addressing medical needs but also driving economic growth through industries like wellness tourism. The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine is actively aligning traditional practices and products with international standards while promoting health services as tourism draws.

This integration of healthcare and economic development positions Thailand uniquely on the global stage, showcasing the nation’s rich heritage and innovative prowess in wellness. The hosting of GWS 2026 is set to be a pivotal moment for Thailand's health industry and a step forward in making its mark internationally.
