A Bangkok–Bueng Kan interprovincial bus slammed into the rear of an articulated lorry during heavy rain in Nakhon Ratchasima late night on 23 August, leaving several passengers injured.

The collision occurred at around 22.30 in front of Ratchasima Witthayalai School, Nai Mueang sub-district, on Mittraphap Road between kilometre markers 141 and 142. Officers from Pho Klang Police Station and emergency rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the scene.

The air-conditioned tour bus, which had departed from Bangkok’s Mo Chit 2 terminal and was carrying a full load of passengers bound for Bueng Kan, struck the back of an 18-wheel trailer transporting a backhoe. The trailer, registered in Phang Nga, had been forced to brake suddenly when a car cut across in front of it. The bus, unable to stop in time on the rain-slicked road, ploughed into the rear of the lorry.

Rescue workers from Hook 31 Nakhon Ratchasima had to temporarily close the road to prevent further incidents as they freed trapped passengers from the wreckage. Hydraulic cutting tools were used to release four people, including a woman of Lao nationality whose legs were broken and trapped by the wreckage. It took more than 30 minutes to extricate her before she was transferred to Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital for treatment.

Dozens of other passengers, most seated towards the rear of the bus, escaped injury. Authorities arranged for a replacement coach to continue their journey to Bueng Kan.

Police are investigating the incident but believe the crash was caused by the abrupt manoeuvre of the car, which forced the truck to brake suddenly and the bus was travelling too fast to stop in time.

Probably, but must have left enough of a gap to get a good run at him.

You can bet. Particularly in the dark and heavy rain.

It's so dangerous to drive here under these conditions.
