A morning collision involving multiple vehicles outside Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi in Pathum Thani has left one person seriously injured. The incident occurred yesterday at around 6am, sparking a scene of chaos just outside the bustling academic area.

The crash began when Patipan, a young driver, failed to spot a motorised tricycle on a dimly lit road in the Prachathipat subdistrict, leading to a severe collision. Thongsuk, the 70-year-old rider of the tricycle, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Prachathipat Hospital for urgent treatment. His tricycle, now heavily damaged, was left as a stark reminder of the morning’s turmoil.

Patipan's car came to a halt approximately 20 metres from the collision, having endured significant damage to its front. Awaiting police, Patipan expressed his shock and detailed how his vehicle spun out of control, striking several parked cars after the initial impact.

Further inspection of the crash site revealed a bigger mess. A Bangkok-registered Mazda 3 sedan bore severe frontal damage. Other affected vehicles included a Honda Civic and a Mercedes-Benz, each sustaining rear-end dents, both registered in Bangkok.

A Lexus suffered severe side damage, while a Chon Buri-registered Toyota Yaris Ativ took the brunt of the destruction. Its rear was badly damaged with a wheel detached, having ploughed into over 10 parked motorcycles, leaving them in disarray.

Patipan recounted his unsuccessful attempt to spot the tricycle due to poor lighting as he drove from a friend's place in Mueang Ek back to his accommodation near a private university in Khlong Luang. His failure to notice Thongsuk's tricycle triggered the crash, setting off a chain reaction affecting the other parked vehicles.

Witness to the aftermath, Surapol, a 64-year-old university security guard, described hearing the crash and rushing to the scene. The chaos that greeted him was immense, with the tricycle and its driver seriously impaired and the primary car involved in further collisions with parked vehicles.

Police Lieutenant Panuwit Charoensap, overseeing the investigation for Khu Khot Police Station, was on-site promptly to document the scene. He advised all parties to liaise with their respective insurance companies to handle the damages, which are expected to run into hundreds of thousands of Thai Baht.

This incident, while fortunately resulting in no fatalities, highlights the persistent issues of road safety and visibility in the area, raising questions about measures to prevent such events in the future.
