It should never happened, this war was a huge mistake by Boris Johnson, Biden and Zelensky.

Of course he wanted all of Ukraine. His initial war plan was to invade Kiev, kick out/murder the existing Ukrainian government which he called Nazi, and install a puppet government. That would mean Russian control of ALL of Ukraine. DUH.

He did want a different government, true, but that never meant having full military control of all of Ukraine.

Even now it's doubtful he'll pursue that, though he clearly could.

Your regard of the terrorist genocidal Putin regime as anything resembling honorable, reasonable, worthy of trust, and peace loving STINKS of an explicit pro Kremlin propaganda bias.

Come on JT it's Kyiv - only commie simps use the Russian phonetic spelling. Are you sure you know as much about Ukraine as you profess to know ?

The distinction between “Kyiv” and “Kiev” is more than just spelling—it carries deep political, cultural, and historical significance. Here’s why it matters:

1. Language and National Identity

  • Kyiv: The transliteration from Ukrainian (Київ).

  • Kiev: The transliteration from Russian (Киев).

Using “Kyiv” recognizes Ukraine’s language and sovereignty. “Kiev” reflects the Russian language, which has been historically used during periods of Russian domination.

2. Political Signaling

  • Since Russia’s invasion in 2014 (and especially in 2022), using “Kyiv” signals support for Ukrainian independence and resistance to Russian aggression.

  • International organizations, including the UN, NATO, and major media outlets, now officially use “Kyiv” to align with Ukraine’s preferred spelling.

3. Cultural Respect

  • For Ukrainians, insisting on “Kyiv” is about self-determination and cultural pride.

  • Using “Kiev” can feel dismissive, even if unintentionally, as it echoes a time when Russian influence suppressed Ukrainian language and culture.

4. Consistency in International Standards

  • The Ukrainian government’s “KyivNotKiev” campaign has promoted this spelling since 2019 to ensure global recognition.

  • Following international naming conventions helps avoid confusion and supports accurate, respectful reporting and diplomacy.

In short: Saying “Kyiv” isn’t just linguistic—it’s politically and culturally correct, showing awareness of Ukraine’s sovereignty and identity.

If you want, I can also explain why some older sources and maps still use “Kiev” and why that can cause misunderstandings today. Do you want me to do that?

We all use language that reflects our worldview. You seem to have a very partial view of Northern Ireland, which may be outside the scope here, but it appears aligned with the maximalist Protestant domination of the statelet in the years leading up to the civil rights movement.

I worked and lived in Northern  Ireland in the early to mid 90s. Owned a house there. My view doesn't align with the deeply sectarian view you suggest. You are using the sectarian language of "6 counties" and decided to invoke Northern Ireland to deflect from your argument defending Russia. Yes, Northern Ireland is off topic. It was you who decided to hijack the thread with your Irish Republican claptrap. Predictably, you are now painting the DPR as some sort of socialist fantasy.

The self declared head of the DPR is Denis Pushilin. He's a crook. Before getting into politics, he ran MMM, cited as one of the world's largest Ponzi schemes. The head of the LPR is Leonid Pasechnik. As the LPR's head of security, he ran torture chambers and death squads.

My view of the IRA is somewhat clouded because they tried to murder my dad in June 1978, when he was home on leave from West Germany. The bastards tracked him because his Austin Maxi was fitted with the BAOR plates. He was medical corps, a biochemist. I don't mind saying that every member of the IRA, live or dead, should rot in hell.

Yeah, my world view is different from yours. You're a communist. I'm not. I'm also not Orange, a Prod, a Loyalist,  a Bluenose, a Red Hand or any of the terms you want to throw out. Yes, he did. Putin sent troops from Belarus, and at the same time, they deployed forces to capture the airport near Kyiv. This trust ultimately failed. There were also troops sent in from Russia. Ukraine managed to defeat the Black Sea Fleet despite having no navy. After over one million casualties, Russia finds itself stuck in a war it cannot win. This "special military operation" has indeed exposed the Russian army as a paper tiger.

On returning home from Alaska Lavrov (who wear USSR t-shorts) said that we gave “independence” (in the sense of independence + the right of using land) to Ukraine on the condition of neutrality. So no neutrality means no independence. Vlad said exactly the same several times in the previous year. And another Russian politician (co-founder of the Putin’s United Russia party) said that there is no legal document of Ukraine’s exit from the USSR (in the sense of taking the land ownership from the previous owner USSR), although it has been officially independent in the UN for about 70 years(with the land belonging to the USSR of course).

That’s why Vlad who has juridical university education is sure that he is the only legal owner of the Ukraine.

Sorry about your dad. Every death in that troubled province was, and still is, a tragedy. I was as relieved and hopeful as anyone when the Good Friday Agreement was reached imperfect and messy though it may be, it has held and brought a measure of peace.

I’ve made my position clear in any number of detailed posts: dispassionately, based on my interpretation of the evidence, and always with an overarching desire to see the deaths end on all sides. Above all of that, from a British standpoint, it’s not our war good or bad. Your projection of my views as though I support these breakaway ersatz republics is your own interpretation and doesn’t reflect reality. And for the record, I’ve never stalked you on ARRSE. In fact, I was the one who mentioned it first, and you later picked up on it.

At the end of the day, old men getting angry on obscure internet forums isn’t healthy. Nobody cares what we think, and we have the square root of nil in terms of any effect on events. In reality, it’s probably better for your mental health if you can step away, get back to nature, and quite literally touch the grass.

La lotta continua… as they say, though in this case it’s meant with full irony.

The most important FACT is that there is no legal document stating the exit of the Ukraine from the USSR.
Vlad supporters never forget this.

Completely irrelevant. If you would to go down that road, the most important FACTS are that 1) the Soviet Union no longer exists 2) Its' former republics did not become satellite states of Russia but instead 3) became sovereign states in their own right.

"The Soviet Union was formally dissolved as a sovereign state and subject of international law on 26 December 1991 by Declaration No. 142-N of the Soviet of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union" (Source: Wikipedia)

Right.

The basic question is -- is Ukraine a sovereign nation?

Ukraine and its allies say yes.

Putin's Russia and his coalition of the killing says no.

Not rocket science.

Let`s do some googling.

You see the link to the original text in Russian, right?
https://ru.wikisource.org/wiki/Декларация_Совета_Республик_ВС_СССР_от_26.12.1991_№_142-Н

And after that you just copy paste the name of the organ who made this decision in Russian: "СОВЕТ РЕСПУБЛИК ВЕРХОВНОГО СОВЕТА СССР"
And google will show you what you see on the screenshot -
Let`s copy/paste it into translate.google.com - and you see this -

The Council of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (Council of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR) is the upper chamber of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, created on the basis of the USSR Law of September 5, 1991 N 2392-I "On the Bodies of State Authority and Administration of the USSR during the Transitional Period", but not provided for in Article 111 of the Constitution of the USSR.

Did you see this - "but not provided for in Article 111 of the Constitution of the USSR". When Gorbachev created this council, he violated the constitution and, according to the law, should have been executed for illegally appropriating power.

Similarly, you can create your own organ like "Supreme council of Russia" that is not legal according to the constitution of Russia and subsequently issue a statement that Russia is no longer exists. Funny but it has no legal significance.

No. Russia said YES if you are talking just about nation, not about lands. Ukraine is an independent state for 70 years in UN. Russia agreed with this. The problem begins when someone began to imagine that this independence also means that the USSR gave its land to the Ukraine. But this has never happened.

Ukraine has been an independent state in UN with lands belonging to USSR for about 70 years. It is a well known FACT.

You should distinguish between de-facto and de-jure events. Your neighbor can take a club and make it so that de-facto you do not live in your house. But de-jure you still live there. This is important for you because when you have the strength - you will get your house back. Vlad and his supporters are sure that we now have enough strength to get our house back.

BTW..I thought Vlad was invading to:

1) Denazify Ukraine.

2) Save the Russian people.

Or are you admitting he lied and wants to take over Ukraine?

Formally, The US government put Al Capone in jail because he didn't pay his taxes. The US wasn't lying when they put Al Capone in jail for that reason. But we also know that there is a difference between a formal reason and a real reason. The real reason was different - Al Capone was put in jail for banditry.
As a lawyer by education and by way of thinking, Vlad would never have entered Ukraine if he had not been confident in his rightness.
