Rescue teams have recovered more bodies from the devastating mudslide that struck Ban Pang Ung village in Mae Chaem district, bringing the confirmed death toll to six, with three people still missing.

The latest bodies, identified as a man and a woman, were retrieved after an intensive day of searching by rescue workers, soldiers and local volunteers using heavy machinery and bare hands, to dig through metres of mud and debris. Families of the missing waited anxiously at the site throughout the day, clinging to hope that more survivors might yet be found.

The disaster, triggered by heavy rainfall, has left widespread destruction in its wake. Officials reported that 24 people were injured and at least 57 houses damaged or destroyed. More than 300 villagers have been directly affected, many left homeless and reliant on emergency shelters and relief supplies.

“The operation is extremely challenging due to the volume of soil and debris covering the area,” said Thosapol Phuean-udom, Inspector-General of the Interior Ministry and incoming Governor of Chiang Mai, who visited the site to oversee relief efforts.

Authorities have prioritised restoring electricity in the disaster zone by deploying mobile generators, which will also help re-establish communications. A royal relief kitchen has been set up to ensure survivors receive three meals a day.

Efforts are now shifting towards both recovery and rehabilitation. Officials are surveying the damage to homes, roads and infrastructure, and have pledged a rapid rebuilding programme.

Meanwhile, rescue workers continue their round-the-clock search for the three villagers still unaccounted for.
