Nearly 1,000 asylum seekers staying in three Bristol hotels are set to receive extra support, including English classes, employment workshops, GP advice, and SIM cards.

While some councils nationwide resist government hotel placements, Bristol City Council plans to expand help for people fleeing war and persecution. The Green-led council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting refugees.

Protests last weekend saw clashes in the city centre between opponents of the hotels and anti-racist demonstrators. A new “sanctuary strategy” will explore further ways for the council to assist asylum seekers in partnership with local organisations.
