Philippine Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri has called for widespread lifestyle checks among government officials, including senators, as scrutiny intensifies following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s recent directive for the executive branch. The move is part of ongoing efforts to investigate discrepancies in flood control projects.

In an online interview on Friday, Zubiri emphasised the importance of transparency across all governmental sectors, stating, "Lifestyle checks should be for everyone, both appointed and elected, because we are not exempt from these lifestyle checks."

Zubiri highlighted the conspicuous consumption of some politicians who display wealth inconsistent with their official earnings. "There are politicians whose only income is their political salary, yet they drive Rolls-Royces and Ferraris. Where do they get these expensive cars?" he queried.

The senator underscored that the assets of politicians should align with their Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) declarations and any additional income sources.

Zubiri proposed the establishment of a third-party agency to oversee these lifestyle checks, one that includes civil society representatives. "We also have civil society involved. These are considerations we must take seriously, especially if a colleague is implicated," he remarked.

He insists that even agencies such as the BIR and Bureau of Customs, historically under suspicion for lifestyle irregularities, should not be exempt from scrutiny. "The BIR and the Bureau of Customs are notorious for such issues. Lifestyle checks should extend to all of them," he asserted.

Zubiri believes that involving civil society in the process ensures integrity, advocating for a system where "someone watches over the watchers."

The call for comprehensive lifestyle checks reflects growing public demand for accountability and transparency in government operations, sending a clear message that ethical governance remains a priority.

As the nation continues to grapple with allegations of corruption and mismanagement, this initiative is seen as a crucial step in rebuilding public trust and ensuring that public servants genuinely serve the nation's interests.
