Flooding across northern and northeastern Thailand has left parts of nine provinces struggling to cope, as remnants of two recent storms continue to wreak havoc.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reports that former storm Kajiki has plunged regions like Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Phitsanulok, and Sukhothai into turmoil, impacting over 5,700 people. In the wake of these torrential rains, rescue teams remain on high alert, particularly in Chiang Mai's Mae Chaem district. A landslide there on 27 August tragically claimed seven lives, injured 15, and damaged 157 homes. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for two individuals still missing.

Meanwhile, in Mae Hong Son, efforts persist to locate a woman swept away by floodwaters in Muang district on 26 August. Though water levels have receded, the damage is palpable, with three bridges destroyed in the area. Temporary Bailey bridges are being erected to restore connectivity.

Phitsanulok has seen its officials actively surveying flood damage while providing assistance to affected residents. Rising waters in the Yom River continue to threaten Chat Trakan, Noen Maprang, and Wang Thong districts.

In Sukhothai, the overflowing Yom River has impacted over 1,300 residents. Fortunately, water levels are now decreasing, offering a glimmer of hope to the beleaguered community.

Meanwhile, the aftermath of former storm Nongfa continues to disrupt life across five provinces: Lampang, Kalasin, Khon Kaen, Nong Bua Lam Phu, and Phetchabun. Over 3,000 individuals have faced the brunt of flooding and landslides since Sunday.

In Lampang's Mae Phrik district, floodwaters are receding, and rescue workers are on the ground, distributing much-needed aid.

Phetchabun faces rising waters as the Pa Sak River overflows into Lom Kao, Lom Sak, and Nam Nao districts, challenging residents' resolve.

Kalasin experienced floods and landslides in six districts on Sunday, with the situation now improving as water levels drop.

In Nong Bua Lam Phu, persistent rains have caused rising flood levels in Muang, Na Wang, Nong Sang, Sri Bun Ruang, and Suwannakhuha districts, affecting 315 residents.

Khon Kaen is also grappling with the crisis, as runoffs impact 559 individuals in Ban Phai, Chum Phae, Nam Phong, Phu Pha Man, and Si Chomphu districts, with the situation expected to escalate as waters continue to rise.

The affected communities across northern and northeastern Thailand are bracing for further challenges as the region confronts nature’s fierce elements. The ongoing efforts to manage the crisis illustrate both the vulnerability and resilience of these communities in the face of such adversity. Local authorities and humanitarian teams remain committed to providing aid and relief to those who need it most, while also planning longer-term recovery strategies.

In a region familiar with the trials of monsoon weather, these recent storms serve as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preparedness and community support in tackling such natural disasters.

30km from P'lok, naff all, bit of heavy rain, no strong winds.
