Police in Chonburi have arrested a tugboat captain after he was found in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition while allegedly exerting influence as a local strongman on Koh Si Chang.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), working in coordination with the Marine Police Division, intercepted the vessel following intelligence reports suggesting that individuals on board posed a threat to public safety in the area.

The suspect, identified as Mr Suchat, was apprehended aboard a tugboat travelling from Pak Nam, Samut Prakan, towards Koh Si Chang, a small island popular with tourists and fishing communities.

During the search of the vessel, officers seized the following items:

• One locally manufactured .45 calibre semi-automatic handgun

• One magazine for .45 calibre ammunition

• One black plastic pistol case

• One fabric holster

• One box of BULLET MASTER .45 FMJ rounds

• Sixteen rounds of .45 calibre ammunition

• Two rounds of .38 calibre ammunition

• One gun cleaning rod

According to investigators, Mr Suchat had been the subject of multiple reports alleging intimidating and abusive behaviour towards others, with witnesses describing him as behaving like an “influential mafia figure” on Koh Si Chang.

Police confirmed he has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, offences which carry significant penalties under the law. The suspect was taken into custody for questioning and remains under investigation as authorities continue to examine his activities and connections.

The CIB stated that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to suppress criminal activity and strengthen public safety.
