In a recent development along the Thai-Cambodian border, Second Army Region commander Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang has stated that Cambodian troop movements, including the deployment of a Bodyguard Headquarters (BHQ) unit near Phu Makua, do not pose a threat to Thailand's sovereignty.

Lt Gen Boonsin addressed concerns about these movements, reassuring that such activities are routine and conducted under the General Border Committee (GBC) guidelines. "They observe us, and we observe them. It's business as usual," he explained.

Phu Makua, situated in Thailand's Si Sa Ket province, has been highlighted by Lt Gen Boonsin as firmly under Thai control, despite its previous occupation by Cambodian troops. "Phu Makua is Thai territory, and we stand ready to protect it," he emphasised, adding that technological advancements such as drones and mine detectors are prioritised to reduce risks during border patrols.

Thai soldiers are instructed to vigilantly monitor the border, as Cambodian forces may plant explosives. Lt Gen Boonsin underscored that the focus on equipment minimises risks to personnel.

The issue of drones venturing into Thai airspace has also been tackled, with anti-drone systems deployed and long-term plans in place to enhance border surveillance. "We are prepared for any scenario, prioritising soldiers' safety and maintaining stability," Lt Gen Boonsin reassured.

Further compounding the situation, Deputy Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit confirmed the discovery of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) near Prasat Ta Kwai in Surin province. These explosives are believed to originate from Cambodian forces.

Gen Nattaphon has called for the presentation of evidence to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stressing that any attempts by Cambodian forces to plant devices will result in severe consequences. He emphasised that political uncertainties do not impair border security, underscoring a commitment to immediate neutralisation of any threats.

As tensions simmer, both nations continue to navigate the complexities of their shared border, relying on continued dialogue and cooperation to prevent escalation and ensure regional stability.
