Military and immigration authorities intercepted a van carrying 49 undocumented Myanmar workers in Thong Pha Phum district, Kanchanaburi Province, after a tip-off regarding illegal migrant smuggling.

On 4 September, Maj. Gen. Atsadawut Panyarachun, commander of the 9th Infantry Division and head of the Surasi Task Force, coordinated the operation with Kanchanaburi Governor Mr. Atisarn Intra and local law enforcement. Acting on intelligence, troops from the 29th Infantry Regiment, along with immigration officers, border patrol police and district officials, patrolled the area near Ban Sahakorn Nikhom in Tambon Sahakorn Nikhom.

Authorities spotted a van (registration from Bangkok) parked on the roadside, appearing heavily loaded. When police attempted to approach the vehicle, the driver sped off. The van was later found parked near Nam Phu Ron, Moo 6, Tambon Hin Dad, where officers discovered 49 Myanmar nationals, 32 men and 17 women, crammed into the vehicle. None carried identification documents, and none could communicate in Thai.

Interrogation via interpreters revealed that the migrants had entered Thailand illegally through natural border points at Bo Niyappu, Sangkhla Buri District. They had travelled by both land and river routes to avoid security checkpoints. The van, driven by an unidentified man, was intended to transport them deeper into Thailand for work in Samut Sakhon and Rayong provinces. Each migrant was reportedly to pay 15,000–20,000 baht to the broker for the journey.

All 49 individuals were taken into custody along with the van and handed over to Thong Pha Phum Police Station for prosecution under the law. Authorities emphasised that this operation highlights ongoing efforts to curb human trafficking and the smuggling of foreign labour in western Thailand.

Up to a million baht paid by the immigrants to enter Thailand for all of them. Now they will be sent back with their losses. The agent who set it their travel will most likely be doing it again once he spends all of their money since they do not know who that person is.
