A road crash has claimed the lives of a married couple after their car struck a runaway cow and overturned into a roadside pond in Wang Thong district, Phitsanulok.

Police said the incident occurred on Highway 12 near Ban Nam Tok Poi in Kaeng Sopha sub-district at around dawn. The victims, identified as Mr Uthis, 53 and Ms Chatthanok, 50, were travelling in a white Honda Jazz when the vehicle collided with a cow that had strayed onto the road. The car then lost control, overturned and plunged into a water-filled ditch. Rescue teams used hydraulic cutters to recover their bodies from the wreckage, after it was pulled from the water, before sending them to Buddhachinaraj Hospital for autopsy.

Relatives told police the couple had been travelling from their home in Khek Yai to deliver a Dharma lecture in Uttaradit province when the crash occurred.

Villagers and police reported that a herd of about ten cattle had been roaming loose in the area since the previous night, causing multiple crashes. In earlier incidents, a pick-up truck and a lorry struck the animals, killing two cows, though no people were injured.

The sight of the latest crash drew a large crowd of onlookers, who gathered near the body of one of the dead cattle lying by the roadside.

Investigators are now working to identify the owner of the cattle and say they will face legal action for negligence leading to loss of life.

Fair enough, but it won't help the couple in the small car.
