Labour Civil war explodes - accused of not listening

Prime Minister Keir Starmer Visits A Shipyard In West Scotland#

Summary:
Labour's internal conflicts have intensified following criticism of Sir Keir Starmer by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham. Burnham accused the government of not listening to its MPs, citing crackdowns on those opposing winter fuel and benefits cuts. His comments come amid a leadership shakeup after Angela Rayner's resignation due to a stamp duty controversy.

Angela Rayner stepped down as Deputy Prime Minister and Housing Secretary after an ethics inquiry found she underpaid stamp duty by £40,000 on a property in Hove. Her resignation has sparked a contest for Labour's new Deputy Leader.

Emily Thornberry emphasized that while Labour has made significant achievements like wage growth and green energy investment, communication is lacking. Defence Secretary John Healey defended the government, praising Rayner's contributions and highlighting the focus on public service.

Burnham called for more regional representation and criticized the lack of action on issues like the Hillsborough law. With the party facing major challenges and a dip in poll numbers, there is a push for a reset in governance and strategy.

Key Takeaways:

  • Leadership Criticism: Andy Burnham urges the government to listen more to Labour MPs amid accusations of ignoring internal voices.
  • Rayner's Resignation: Angela Rayner's departure over a stamp duty issue has sparked leadership competition within Labour.
  • Call for Change: Calls for more inclusive governance and addressing key issues to strengthen Labour's position.

Despite just how awful the Labour Party is, my memory is still able to well remember how much worse the Tories were (and still are).  Labour have the time to turn it around before the next election (despite also being appalling, as it stands I can only see Reform winning the next election).  What a disastrous mess the UK is in!

I thought Sunak's government was appalling, but Starmer's performance has taken inept governance to a new low
