Myanmar’s military has launched a brutal campaign in Budalin Township, Sagaing Region, burning five villages and killing two women between 1 and 4 September, according to local resistance sources.

On 4 September, junta vehicles entered Shante Village, where soldiers reportedly shot two women working in nearby fields. The victims were unarmed civilians, said a member of the Sagaing Federal Unit ERST Committee.

The attacks form part of a wider offensive in the region, with troops deployed in multiple columns to raid and loot villages. Shwetaung, Htantaw, Kanthar, Konethar, and Htoogyi were all set ablaze, though the full extent of the damage remains unclear.

On 5 September, soldiers advanced into Thabyaybin village, further disrupting local life during the critical harvest season. Residents say they are now unable to access rice and peanut fields due to the military’s presence.

The Sagaing Region has been a stronghold of resistance since the 2021 coup, and has faced repeated assaults by junta forces. Rights groups have condemned the military’s scorched-earth tactics, which include arson, extrajudicial killings, and the displacement of thousands.

As the junta struggles to maintain control over large parts of the country, its reliance on violent repression continues to escalate, deepening Myanmar’s humanitarian crisis.
