Labour Minister Defends France Amid Record Small Boat Crossings

Labour Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard faced tough questioning on Sky News over the surge of migrants crossing the English Channel. On Saturday alone, 1,097 migrants arrived in 17 small boats, bringing the total for 2025 to 30,100—a 37% increase compared to the same point last year and the earliest the 30,000 mark has been surpassed since 2018.

Presenter Wilfred Frost pressed Pollard on why France had not intercepted any of the 17 boats. Pollard emphasized that the UK is working closely with France under a newly signed agreement aimed at speeding up returns and targeting people smugglers. “If you get on a small boat and arrive in the UK, you can be returned,” he said, adding that this agreement marks the first time France has committed to tackling boats in French waters.

Pollard highlighted joint efforts with the National Crime Agency and French authorities, describing the new pilot scheme as crucial to reducing the flow of migrants. While acknowledging that more work is needed, he insisted progress is being made.

The rising crossings underscore the growing challenge for UK authorities. With over 30,000 migrants reaching the UK so far this year, Channel crossings are at record levels, fueling debate over border security and cooperation with France.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Over 1,000 migrants crossed the Channel on 17 boats in a single day.

  2. Labour minister Luke Pollard defended UK-France cooperation agreements.

  3. Total 2025 crossings hit 30,100, a 37% increase year-on-year.
