Israel ramps up strikes on Gaza City, killing at least 32 people

Featured Replies

One of the strikes overnight and into early morning on Saturday hit a house in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, killing a family of 10, including a mother and her three children, said health officials. Images showed the strikes hitting followed by plumes of smoke.

The number of people leaving has risen in recent weeks, according to aid workers, but many families remain stuck because of the cost of finding transport and housing, while others have been displaced too many times and do not want to move again, not trusting that anywhere in the enclave is safe.

The United Nations put the number of people who have left at more than 100,000 between mid-August and mid-September. The UN and aid groups have warned that displacing hundreds of thousands of people will exacerbate the dire humanitarian crisis.

“We’re going south to camp in a tent. You can play in the sand. It’s just a trip and then we can go home.”

This is what I was forced to tell my three-year-old daughter last week, as I prepared to evacuate her, my wife, and our newborn baby girl out of Gaza City, while Israeli forces advanced.

I had to pretend we were going on a camping trip to the south of the besieged Strip. I wanted to spare her the danger, suffering, and terror of the truth that we were being forcibly displaced for the eighth time.

Israel destroys multiple high-rises in Gaza City after evacuation warning

Israel said Hamas had used the area for observation posts and intelligence gathering, claiming militants were preparing to strike Israeli troops, though no evidence has been released yet.

Gaza residents condemned the demolitions, describing them as an attempt to force displacement. The Israeli Defence Minister, Israel Katz, wrote on X that “the skyline of Gaza is changing,” sharing video footage of one of the targeted strikes.

GENEVA (Reuters) -The top U.N. expert on Palestinian rights, Francesca Albanese, said Israel was trying to make Gaza City unliveable in its assault on the enclave's largest urban area and was endangering the lives of Israeli hostages.

"Israel is bombing using unconventional weapons ... it is trying to forcibly evacuate Palestinians. Why? This is the last piece of Gaza that needs to be rendered unliveable before advancing the ethnic cleansing of that piece of land," Albanese told reporters in Geneva.

Nine hours of frantic negotiation with the Israeli military. A last-minute scramble to find trucks in a devastated Gaza Strip, where fuel is in short supply. Six hours of frantic packing, carefully stacking cardboard boxes on open flatbed trucks.

With an Israeli airstrike looming, aid workers carried out a last-minute rescue mission to salvage thousands of priceless artifacts from a Gaza warehouse before the building was flattened.

The warehouse contained artifacts from over 25 years of excavations, including items from a 4th-century Byzantine monastery designated as a World Heritage Site by the U.N. cultural organization UNESCO, and some of the oldest known evidence of Christianity in Gaza. The Israeli military said the building housed Hamas intelligence installations and planned to demolish it as part of their expanded military operation in Gaza City.
