Border troops intercepted a drug shipment in Mae Fah Luang district, Chiang Rai, on 12 September, discovering 99 kilograms of methamphetamine abandoned by two suspects who fled into the forest. No arrests were made at the scene as the suspects evaded capture under cover of darkness.

The operation was carried out by Task Force 31 of the Thai Ranger Regiment following a tip-off about a drug smuggling attempt in the area. Troops set up a checkpoint on 12 September at Ban Chiang Ja Sai, Tambon Mae Salong Nok and spotted two suspicious motorcycles approaching. When ordered to stop, the riders abandoned the vehicles and ran into nearby woods.

Authorities recovered two unregistered Honda Wave motorcycles and 99 black plastic bags containing methamphetamine, believed to have been intentionally left behind to avoid arrest. The seized drugs were taken to Mae Fah Luang Police Station for further investigation. Officials confirmed they are continuing to track and dismantle the smuggling network behind the shipment.

Experts note that northern Thailand remains a key transit area for illicit substances, making proactive checkpoints critical for controlling distribution. Local law enforcement emphasised that swift coordination between military and police units was essential in preventing the shipment from reaching wider markets. The case highlights ongoing challenges in securing border areas and tracking mobile criminal groups.

Authorities plan to extend investigations to identify and apprehend the individuals involved and any associated networks. Forensic and intelligence teams are reviewing surveillance, local informant reports, and previous drug seizure patterns to anticipate future smuggling attempts. Follow-up operations are expected to involve broader inter-agency collaboration across Chiang Rai province.
